Job summary

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) invites applications for the Leader of Mi kmaw Culture and Language. This role provides strategic leadership in Mi kmaw language and culture, supporting closing the gap and raising outcomes for Mi kmaw and Indigenous students, in collaboration with teachers and staff across HRCE schools.

The Leader will supervise and evaluate a group of Mi kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Workers, mentor teachers, and contribute to Treaty Education initiatives

Qualifications

• Designated Mikmaw position with expert knowledge of Mikmaw history, culture and education.
• Ability to demonstrate Mikmaw ways of being and knowing.
• Knowledge of Treaty Education and Mikmaw lens in education.
• Commitment to reconciliation and working with Mikmaw youth and communities.
• Bachelor degree in Education or equivalent experience; leadership experience preferred.
• Ability to travel to schools within the HRM.

Job description

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) is the largest Centre for Education in Atlantic Canada with over 11,000 full-time, part-time and casual employees. Serving more than 60,000 students in 136 schools, our geographic region spans a 350 km radius.

The Leader, Mi’kmaw Culture and Language shall be responsible for providing leadership in the area of Mi’kmaw Language and Culture in support of closing the gap and raising the bar for Mi’kmaw and Indigenous students. The Leader will also provide leadership, supervision and evaluation to a group of Mi’kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Workers. Through expertise in Mi’kmaw ways of being, knowing and doing, the Leader of Mi’kmaw Culture and Language will support student success plans and work with classroom teachers to support the Treaty Education framework. The Leader of Mi’kmaw Language and Culture will fulfill a co-modeling, co-learning and collaborative role. The Leader will apply knowledge of current research in Mi’kmaw/Indigenous education with a focus on mentoring teachers to facilitate change in a positive manner. Working collaboratively as a member of the Diversity team, the Leader of Mi’kmaw Culture and Language will report directly to the Regional Coordinator, Mi’kmaw Education/Services.

Qualifications:

(a) Designated position for a Mi’kmaw person. Excellent knowledge of Mi’kmaw history, culture, traditions and educational issues are required;

(b) Excellent ability to demonstrate Mi’kmaw Ways of being and knowing;

(c) Excellent knowledge of Treaty Education; fosters components of Treaty Education through a Mi’kmaw lens;

(d) Strong commitment to reconciliation;

(e) Experience working with Mi’kmaw youth/students, communities, Elders and organizations;

(f) Post‑secondary education (i.e. Bachelor degree in Education, Certificate in Adult Learning, etc.) or equivalent obtained through relevant training and experience;

(g) Knowledge of or fluency in Mi’kmaw Language is an asset;

(h) Previous leadership and supervisory experience working in a unionized environment is considered an asset;

(i) Ability to travel to schools within the HRM.

Salary:

This is a PEG (Professional Employees Group) position classified on the Education Entities Non-Union Compensation Framework at Band 9 with a salary range between $82,350 to $102,938.
