Job description

At Kabam, we’re constantly raising the bar of excellence in free-to-play gaming. We hire for passion and diversity so that we can triumph in our collective skill. Our teams are made up of a fusion of personalities and interests bound together by a collaborative nature, fun-loving culture, and a drive to do what it takes to make great games. And this is where you come in…

As Lead UI Artist for an unannounced project, you will set the visual direction for UI and UX for the project and lead a small team to execute that vision across the game’s many screens and interfaces. You are highly organized, self-motivated, and an excellent communicator who can effortlessly move between high and low-level problems. You have an inherent desire to understand players and to represent them in our games. You have strong visual and technical skills that allow you to visualize consistent and engaging UI in concept and guide engineers and technical artists in executing that UI in engine. You are able to define not only the guidelines for how a UI looks, but also how it moves and reacts to player input.

This role is a full-time, on-site position based 5 days a week at our Downtown Vancouver studio.

In this role, you can expect to:
  • Visualize and curate the UI direction for the game to set the visual target and keep all UI consistent.
  • Monitor and advocate for the consistency of game UI across all interfaces (buttons, icons, etc…).
  • Concept, create, and guide the development of icons and other graphic designs as part of screens.
  • Conceptualize screens in various levels of completion, from wireframes to polished final assets.
  • Prototype screens and interactions before execution.
  • Create icons, graphic designs, and other assets required to be implemented as UI in game.
  • Convey the motion and visual effects needed by the UI to be reactive, dynamic and engaging to the player.
  • Present and communicate design intent and outcomes to stakeholders, driving UI designs to completion at the highest quality.
  • Own the UI & UX process; coalescing product, game design, engineering, art and live ops needs to produce actionable artifacts.
  • Implement visual components of screens in the engine as needed.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to develop a small team of UI & UX designers and contract resources.
  • Work with contract/outsource partners to expand our UI capabilities.
To be successful in this role, your background includes:
  • 6+ years of experience as a UI and/or UX Designer or Product Designer in a professional capacity, preferably within video games.
  • 1 or more shipped titles in a Senior or Lead UI artist role in mobile games.
  • An expert level of expertise in using design tools commonly used in the industry, including Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, Photoshop, and others.
  • Skilled with Figma, the Adobe Suite, and other prototyping software.
  • The ability to solve complex problems in resourceful and effective ways, with human-centered design in mind.
  • Exceptional eye for visual design.
  • Ability to own multiple features.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter and excellent prioritizing skills.
  • Experience in Unity.
  • A passion for mobile and F2P games.
