Job summary

Government of Alberta in Smoky Lake is seeking a Genetics and Tree Improvement Technologist to lead provincial seed management, manage genetics assets, and oversee seed orchards and trials across Alberta.

The role reports to the Provincial Seed Officer, supervises staff, coordinates operations, ensures compliance with standards, and supports long-term sustainability of forest genetics resources.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Agriculture, or related field with 2+ years of related experience.
  • Two-year diploma in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Agriculture, or related field with 4+ years of related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Managing the provincial tree and shrub seed inventory, including storage and distribution to forest nurseries.
  • Ensuring timely delivery of reforestation seed to support annual seedling production.
  • Maintaining NSIMS and seed databases and records.
  • Applying Alberta’s Forest Genetic Resource Management and Conservation Standards in operations.
  • Coordinating seed orchards, clone banks, provenance trials, and progeny trials.
  • Supervising staff, organizing work schedules, and ensuring annual operational requirements are completed.
  • Representing operational interests on internal committees and initiatives.
