Job summary

Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is seeking a Lead Data Engineer for a temporary assignment up to 18 months in Pickering, ON. You will lead the architecture, design and delivery of AWS-based data solutions, mentor Data Engineers, and drive scalable data pipelines across batch and real-time analytics. Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive development experience in a senior technical capacity.
  • 3+ years of experience in an IT Team Lead capacity.
  • Experience with AWS services (Lambda, Glue, S3, Redshift).
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, Groovy, PostgreSQL.
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes, OpenSearch, Iceberg or Hudi.
  • Experience with Apache Spark and Kafka.
  • Strong communication, leadership and stakeholder management.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to Data Engineers.

You have:

  • Diploma or Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive development experience in a senior technical capacity
    • Amazon Web Services (AWS) including Lambda, Glue, S3, Redshift and related cloud-native services
    • Python, SQL, Groovy, PostgreSQL
    • Kubernetes, OpenSearch, Apache Iceberg or Apache Hudi
    • Apache Spark, Kafka or similar streaming technologies
  • Advanced knowledge of IT technology, tools, skills, techniques and methods
  • 3+ years of experience in an IT Team Lead capacity
  • Computer science and data engineering principles, including programming, data structures, algorithms, data modelling, data architecture and scalable data pipeline design.
  • Modern software engineering and DataOps practices, including CI/CD, version control, automated testing, infrastructure as code, observability, monitoring and data quality.
  • Designing cloud-native applications and modern data platforms using distributed processing, data lake/lakehouse architectures, APIs, event-driven design and messaging technologies.
  • Core data engineering practices, including data ingestion, transformation, orchestration, storage, metadata management, data lineage and data governance.
  • Effective conflict resolution, team building and client relationship management skills
  • Analytical and interpretative reasoning skills to assess client needs and develop cost effective and efficient IT solutions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to communicate effectively to a wide variety of audiences

Nice to have:

  • AWS, Data Engineering, Analytics, or Data Architecture certifications (or actively pursuing certification)
  • Expertise in cloud computing architecture

What you will do:

  • Lead the architecture, design, and delivery of AWS-based OLAP, data warehouse, and lakehouse solutions that enable enterprise reporting, advanced analytics, AI, and business intelligence capabilities.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to Data Engineers, establishing best practices for AWS cloud architecture, data modeling, performance optimization, and DataOps.
  • Design, develop, and optimize scalable AWS-native data pipelines using services such as Redshift, Glue, Lambda, and S3 to support batch, streaming, and near real-time analytics workloads.
  • Lead the implementation of modern cloud data platforms and analytical environments, ensuring scalability, reliability, security, and cost efficiency.
  • Establish and govern enterprise standards for data quality, governance, lineage, metadata management, and security to deliver trusted and business-ready data assets.
  • Lead technical investigations, proof-of-concepts, and the resolution of complex production issues while overseeing monitoring, observability, platform performance.
