Job summary

Mattr is seeking a Lead Automation Engineer in Calgary (Hybrid) to own the design, build, and delivery of automation solutions that improve plant operations and manufacturing performance. You will drive projects end-to-end, from concept through commissioning, partnering with Operations, Engineering, and Plant teams.

The role requires strong PLC programming (ladder logic, structured text), machine design and BOM creation, and hands-on experience commissioning systems in industrial environments.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience in automation, controls, or related engineering roles.
• Strong PLC programming experience with ladder logic and structured text.
• Experience designing and commissioning machines or automation systems in plant or field environments.
• Experience with machine design, automation systems, and BOM creation.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in manufacturing settings.
• Ability to lead projects and coordinate across multiple stakeholders.
• Strong English communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and execution of automation projects from concept through commissioning and startup.
• Develop and modify PLC programs, building solutions from scratch and adapting existing frameworks.
• Design automation systems for new builds, including machine design and system architecture.
• Drive commissioning at plant sites and ensure successful installation and startup (travel up to 25%).
• Collaborate with Operations, Plant Managers, R&D/Product Engineering, and Sales to define requirements.
• Lead project execution activities and guide project teams.
• Contribute to SCADA/dashboard development to improve plant visibility.
• Support continuous improvement and data automation initiatives.
