Job summary

Good Shepherd Centres in Hamilton, Ontario seeks a housing support worker to assist customers with housing searches, tenancy setup, and advocacy within a trauma-informed, harm-reduction framework.

You will work with shelter staff and community partners to coordinate housing plans, liaise with landlords, and help navigate complex systems to prevent homelessness. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills are required.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Social Service or a related field is required.
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education, training and experience in Social Services or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Housing First Framework and the ability to assist service users with system navigation.
  • Strong understanding of and experience working with issues impacting youth, women, and families including homelessness, violence against women and children, poverty, mental illness and substance use.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the housing system in the City of Hamilton, the Residential Tenancies Act, Landlord and Tenant Board, and the Ontario Human Rights Code required.
  • Commitment to and experience working within a person-centered, trauma-informed, harm reduction and housing first framework.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, verbal and written communication, time management and organization, and ability to prioritize workload.
  • CPR certification or willingness to be certified is required.
  • Valid G license required.
  • Fluency in a 2nd language is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support service users in housing search including accompaniment into the community, filling out rental applications, and advocating where required.
  • Maintain current knowledge of community resources and build relationships with organizations providing related services.
  • Develop partnerships with landlords and housing providers to build an inventory of rental units.
  • Mediate housing-related matters between landlords and tenants to support housing sustainability.
  • Coordinate finances, lease signings, move-in inspections, repairs and maintenance for new tenancy.
  • Collaborate with shelter staff, housing-first programs and partners to develop housing plans for rapid exit from homelessness.
  • Assist service users in navigating governmental and non-governmental systems.
  • Help service users build formal and informal support networks to maintain housing and quality of life.
  • Assist in developing plans using brief intervention to reduce future housing crises and connect to services.
  • Attend weekly case conferences to share housing information with shelter staff.
  • Observe health and safety rules and comply with Health and Safety Act and regulations.

Job description

HOURS

- 37.5 hours per week. Shifts are Monday to Friday (9:00am to 5:00pm) with one late shift (11:00am to 7:00pm) per week on a set schedule and one Saturday shift worked per month. Some flexibility in work hours may be required.

Rate of pay

- $24.89/ Hourly

How You Will Make an Impact

The successful candidate will extend our mission to residential and non-residential clients through the provision of respectful and appropriate housing support services. This may include case management, crisis intervention and supportive counseling. The incumbent must be able to work independently in a challenging and rewarding values-based environment.

  • Support service users in conducting a housing search including accompaniment into the community, filling out rental applications, and offering advocacy where required
  • Remain current on relevant community resources and to develop and maintain professional relationships with individuals and organizations within the community who provide complementary services
  • Liaise with community landlords and other housing providers to develop partnerships and build an inventory of rental units
  • Mediate housing related matters between landlords and tenants to support housing sustainability
  • Coordinate finances, lease signings, move in inspections, repairs and maintenance to prepare for new tenancy
  • Work in collaboration with shelter staff, housing first programs and community partners to develop housing plans that support rapid exit from homelessness.
  • Assist service users in navigating various governmental and non-governmental systems
  • Support service users in building both formal and informal support networks that will assist them in maintaining housing and enhanced quality of life
  • Assist in developing a plan within a brief intervention approach that decreases the likelihood of a future or recurrent housing crises including assisting with connections to other services
  • Attend weekly case conference to share housing information and resources with shelter staff
  • Observe all health and safety rules and work in compliance with the provisions of the occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations
What You'll Bring to Our Team
  • Post-secondary education in Social Service or a related field is required
