Job summary

City of Saskatoon (Saskatoon Regional Waste Management Centre) seeks a Labourer/Landfill Worker to direct vehicle traffic, screen waste, enforce site rules, and operate equipment to ensure safe, efficient disposal and recycling services for the public.

Requires Grade 12 or GED, 3 months waste ops experience, valid Saskatchewan licences, and CRC. First aid certification preferred. 40 hours weekly; CAD 30.35/hour. Accommodation and safety training provided as part of the role.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education or GED within 12 months of hire
  • Minimum of three months experience in waste stream operations
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 3A or 1A Learner’s Licence, and must obtain 1A Driver’s Licence within 2 attempts
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, recognized first aid certificate

Responsibilities

  • Directs vehicles in an orderly manner to prevent accidents
  • Screens waste disposal at unloading to prevent dumping of unacceptable material and encourage recycling
  • Enforces posted rules (no salvaging, no smoking near disposal areas)
  • Monitors and maintains recycling areas including the used oil facility
  • Operates a roll-off truck, skid steer, water truck, and front-end loader
  • Performs site maintenance duties including litter collection and snow clearing
  • Performs duties of Landfill Labourer or Weigh Scale Attendant as required
  • Supports and promotes health and safety per regulations and policies
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

This position is a CUPE 859 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Supervisor VI, this position performs a variety of duties at the Saskatoon Regional Waste Management Centre (Landfill) site to ensure efficient disposal of waste by the public.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Directs vehicles in an orderly manner to ensure accident prevention.
  • Screens waste disposal at the point of unloading to prevent dumping of unacceptable material and to encourage recycling efforts.
  • Enforces posted rules, e.g. no salvaging, no smoking near disposal areas.
  • Monitors and maintains the recycling areas, including the used oil facility.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, including a roll-off truck, skid steer, water truck, and front-end loader.
  • Performs site maintenance duties, including litter collection, snow clearing, along with office and shed cleaning.
  • Performs the duties of the Landfill Labourer or Weigh Scale Attendant as required.
  • Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements:

  • Grade 12 education or must obtain GED within 12 months of hire.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Knowledge of solid waste operations, particularly disposal and recycling.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to regularly and consistently attend work to ensure effective operations and service delivery.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to follow all applicable procedures and policies.
  • Ability to understand and execute instructions.
  • Ability to participate in training sessions, e.g. WHMIS, customer service, used oil collection facility and public weigh scale operations.
  • Physical ability to perform assigned duties.
