Job summary

Homewood Health in Ontario is seeking a part-time Medical Laboratory Technologist to join a collaborative team. Hours up to 28 per week, Monday to Friday 7:30 am–3:30 pm with no evenings or weekends.

You will perform tests, report results, maintain QC and supervise Lab Assistant students in a hospital/private lab setting.

Qualifications

  • 3 years of Community College in Medical Laboratory Technology (biochemistry and hematology).
  • 1-2 years of experience in a hospital or private laboratory.
  • Member in good standing with the CMLTO.
  • Knowledge of lab testing, techniques and analyzers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tests without direct supervision per lab procedures.
  • Communicate accurate results to physician or nursing staff.
  • Maintain charts, QC records and equipment maintenance.
  • Supervise Lab Assistant students.
  • Ensure proper labeling and sample handling.

Hours: Up to 28 hours per week, Days will vary Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 3:30 pm (no evenings or weekends required)

What you'll be doing:

  • Perform tests without direct supervision, in accordance with the established procedures outlined in the laboratory procedure manuals
  • Communicate accurate results to the physician in charge or to the appropriate nursing staff, documenting verbal reports
  • Set-up, shut down and perform regular maintenance procedures as well as update the charts, trouble-shoot and repair analyzers
  • Perform urinalysis including microscopic examination of sediment
  • Conduct manual laboratory tests (e.g., pregnancy test, occult blood test)
  • Perform quality control on laboratory tests, review/evaluate results and resolve any issues before patient samples are analyzed and results reported
  • Ensure each specimen sent to the lab is properly labelled and follow up to provide coaching/training if necessary
  • Confirm that samples meet the requirements for specific tests
  • Perform venipunctures on patients and assist with venipuncture training
  • Prepare samples for testing (both on-site and referred out) and determine which samples are referred to an outside laboratory and which reference laboratory to use
  • Collect data for evaluation of new methodology
  • Maintain and file daily log charts, worksheet records and statistical records
  • Order supplies such as analyzer reagents, QC material and other consumables as needed
  • Maintain monthly statistical records on quality control, maintenance, test numbers
  • Supervise Lab Assistant students
  • Operate within the established standards of the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA)
What we're looking for:
  • 3 years of Community College in Medical Laboratory Technology (minimum of biochemistry and hematology)
  • 1-2 years' experience in a hospital or private laboratory
  • Member in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
  • Current knowledge of relevant lab testing, lab techniques, methods, procedures and analyzers
  • Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • Solid understanding of, and commitment to, quality assurance and quality management
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, prioritize workload and manage time effectively
