Job summary

Blanche River Health in Kirkland Lake/Englehart region is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician to perform a variety of support tasks under supervision, including limited testing and phlebotomy, specimen handling, and report processing.

The role requires MLPAO-approved MLA/Technician education and active MLPAO or CSMLS certification, with a preference for cMLA/TMLPAO. Benefits include HOOPP pension and education bursary programs, with a commitment to wellness and equity.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an MLPAO-approved MLA/Technician program.
• Must have active MLPAO or CSMLS certification in good standing.
• Preference given to those with cMLA/TMLPAO designation.

Responsibilities

• Perform limited testing/tasks in assigned areas with safety practices (ECG, Point Of Care, phlebotomy).
• Receive, sort, and process specimens per established procedures.
• Prepare, handle and dispense tubes/reagents as required; issue blood products as needed.
• Perform report handling, statistics collection, and document control and inventory/supply control."
• Assist in maintenance of equipment and benches; observe hospital policies and patient confidentiality.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Laboratory & Pharmacy, the Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician (MLA/T) performs a variety of support functions under direct supervision including; performing limited testing/tasks in assigned areas using accepted safety practices including electrocardiogram, Point Of care and phlebotomy; receiving, sorting, and processing specimens following established procedures and guidelines; preparing, handling and dispensing tubes/reagents, as required; receiving, thawing and issuing blood products as required; performing report handling, statistics collection, and document control and inventory and supply control responsibilities; assisting in maintenance of equipment and benches; observing and understanding Hospital and departmental policies and procedures; adhering to Hospital and departmental mission and value statements while maintaining patient confidentiality; performing cross functional duties, as assigned, or requested including performing telephone responsibilities; performing other duties related to and consistent with job classification, as required.

Certifications and Registrations

• Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician program approved by the Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO)
• Must have active membership and Certification with the Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO) OR the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) in good standing.
• Preference will be given to Medical Laboratory Technicians who have the cMLA/TMLPAO.

Skill, Ability & Experience

• The ability to provide effective services to clients/residents
• Bilingualism will be considered an asset.
• Advanced experience in Point of Care
• Must possess the ability to perform routine office procedures and clerical duties rapidly and accurately.
• Must possess the verbal ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians and other medical personnel in order to give and receive information and instructions.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships, while demonstrating tact and discretion when dealing with patients, the general public, and other employees and physicians
• Must possess the learning ability to understand laboratory terminology and infection control procedures.
