CHEO in Ottawa, a leading pediatric health system, is hiring for a Medical Laboratory Technician. The role supports cross-functional teams, prepares specimens, and processes tests in the LIS from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.

Ideal candidates hold an OSMT/MLA certificate or equivalent, possess strong communication skills, and are committed to learning. Bilingualism is preferred. A supportive, diverse work environment with OPSU representation is offered.

Qualifications

  • Criminal Record Check required.
  • OSMT or MLA certificate (or equivalent) required.
  • Genetics lab experience preferred.
  • Strong verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to learning.

  • Works effectively under minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Receive, verify, label and prepare clinical specimens for testing and shipping.
  • Register patient samples and request tests in the LIS; perform non-complex sample processing.
  • Provide service coverage for meals, breaks, vacation and sick leave as required.
  • Comply with health and safety guidelines including universal precautions.
  • Perform duties per the laboratory QA program.
  • Show initiative and assist coworkers in timely sample processing.
  • Assist in instructing medical laboratory students, residents and other health care workers as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY
  • Work effectively in a cross-functional team environment
  • Receive, verify, label and prepare clinical specimens for testing and shipping
  • May be required to register patient samples and request tests in the LIS, and perform non-complex sample processing
  • Provide service coverage for meals, breaks, vacation and sick leave as required.
  • Comply with / adhere to health and safety guidelines which include the practice of universal precautions
  • Perform all duties in accordance with the standards outlined in the laboratory quality assurance program
  • Show initiative and assist co-workers in timely sample processing
  • Assist in the instruction of medical laboratory students, residents and other health care workers as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

The hours for this position are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, based on operational needs.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Criminal Record Check (Essential)
  • OSMT or College Technician (MLA) Certificate (or appropriate combination of training and experience) (Essential)
  • Previous experience working in a genetics laboratory (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills (Essential)
  • Demonstrated commitment to learning (Essential)
  • Bilingual (English/French) (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated initiative; team work; flexible work schedule (Essential)
  • Works effectively under minimal supervision (Essential)
