Job Title: Lab Technician 1

Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Manager

Department: Inorganics

Location: Burnaby, B.C.

Salary Range: $18/hr - $20/hr

1-year contract

Basic Purpose:
  • Perform simple sample preparation and analysis proficiently.
  • Gain full knowledge regarding sample preparation procedures and quality control techniques in accordance with SOPs and Health and Safety Policies.
  • Produce high-quality, defensible analytical data.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Follow SOPs and Health & Safety Policies during all activities.
  • Review LIMS reports to plan daily sample preparation.
  • Prepare calibration standards and samples as per SOPs and WI.
  • Perform sample preparation including moisture determination, filtration, digestion, and extraction on various sample types.
  • Follow SOPs for sample preparation and basic testing procedures (pH, Conductivity, etc.).
  • Calculate results and enter data into LIMS.
  • Identify non-routine samples and seek guidance.
  • Carry out quality control procedures and recognize unacceptable data.
  • Prepare standards and reagents, monitor supplies.
  • Ensure accuracy in sample prep and analysis.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments.
  • Meet client quality and turnaround time requirements.
  • Minimize risks of mislabeling and contamination.
  • Report problems and corrective actions.
  • Work under guidance of senior technicians or supervisors.
  • Support lab safety and policies.
  • Maintain training records and a clean work area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience.
  • Successful experience as a Laboratory Technician.
  • Knowledge of sample handling and quality assurance.
  • Understanding of laboratory health and safety practices.
  • Manual dexterity, record keeping, and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility and attention to detail.
  • Good communication and computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
Working Conditions:
  • Fast-paced lab environment requiring patience and persistence.
  • Flexible hours, overtime, shift work.
  • Long periods of standing, some lifting (up to 40 lbs).
  • Handling hazardous materials with safety procedures.
