Job summary

Qualifications

  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Familiar with sensors, instrumentation, and DAQ systems.

Responsibilities

You will be working in the Technical Department on the R&D Team in support of the Engineering and Development teams in the prototyping, setup, testing, and validation of new and modified HVAC products. This hands-on role also includes ownership of day-to-day lab operations, ensuring an efficient, safe, and well-maintained working environment for prototype builds and testing activities. This position is ideal for someone who is mechanically skilled, detail-oriented, and thrives in a technical, hands-on role with strong ownership and collaboration with key stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Prototype & Test Execution
  • Assemble prototype air handling units, subsystems, or mock-ups using engineering drawings, CAD models, and instructions.
  • Support execution of design verification, functional, safety and performance tests in collaboration with engineering staff.
  • Install and maintain instrumentation.
  • Calibrate and operate test equipment and data acquisition systems.
  • Assist in evaluating and troubleshooting mechanical, systems, electrical, and control issues during testing.
  • Performance and Efficiency metrics: input rates, burner operation, energy and fuel efficiency (P4.1, AFUE, FER, SEER, HSPF, etc.)
Lab Management & Support
  • Maintain, calibrate and record all related Measurement & Test Equipment (MTE).
  • Oversee day-to-day lab operations.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness (5S), order, and adherence to safety procedures and best practices.
  • Track and manage inventory of test equipment, instrumentation, consumables, and prototype components.
  • Schedule and prioritize lab activities.
  • Identify and communicate maintenance needs, safety concerns, or process improvement opportunities within the lab.
  • Ensure proper documentation of lab activities.
  • Ensure compliance with quality system requirements, where applicable
  • Report SR&ED time and materials daily
Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with thermal, mechanical, systems, electrical, and controls engineers to support test plans and iterate on prototype designs.
  • Document and report test results, anomalies, and observations.
  • Provide technical feedback to the engineering team based on hands-on experience during assembly and testing.
Skills, Education, and/or Experience

The following are education and experience criteria used to evaluate the suitability of the Laboratory Technician Profile or candidates for the position:

  • Diploma, certificate, or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, HVAC Technology or Trades, or related field preferred
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in a lab, prototype or test environment; HVAC experience is required.
  • Proven mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and flexibility to work afternoon/evening shifts as required.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC fundamentals and components (fans, compressors, coils, dampers, controls, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Familiarity with sensors, instrumentation, test stands, and DAQ systems.
  • Comfortable using basic hand and power tools, HVAC equipment (gauges, pumps, recovery, etc.), measurement equipment, and fabrication methods.
  • Familiarity with current product and industry regulatory, safety and performance standards
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities within a lab setting.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and communication.
  • Flexible and adaptable to learning, understanding, and applying new technologies
  • Certifications Preferred:Gas: G3, G2 & G1, Refrigeration:313A/D , ODP Certificate
Job Conditions
Physical Demands:
  • Hands-on work with occasional periods of sitting at desk work involving computer use.
  • Moderate physical requirements – able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Sitting, lifting, squatting, pushing, or reaching for intermittent or extended periods.

  • May be exposed to loud, repetitive sounds from machinery or equipment.
