Job summary

Conestoga College seeks a licensed HVAC Technician to operate, maintain and repair heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems across campus locations. This full-time role emphasizes safe, reliable performance in a clean campus environment with minimal overtime and no sales pressure.

The position offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package including CAAT pension, extended health and life insurance, vacation and winter closures, and a Monday–Friday schedule.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years' hands-on experience servicing HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of BAS and large building systems.
  • Familiarity with building management control systems and DDC.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematic diagrams.
  • Understanding of Energy Act and CSA standards.
  • Experience with water treatment, predictive maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, update, and repair HVAC building systems including heat pumps, boilers, and controls.
  • Monitor refrigeration systems and water treatment.
  • Document maintenance and input data into CMMS.
  • Source parts and suppliers and purchase materials.
  • Install and commission new HVAC equipment.
  • Oversee work by contractors and report findings to the Manager of Operations & Maintenance.

Position Summary

Full-Time Support Staff, replacement position

(First consideration for support staff and academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective collective agreements)

Conestoga is seeking a skilled and experienced HVAC Technician responsible for the daily operation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across multiple campus locations. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable performance of mechanical systems and contributes to a comfortable and sustainable learning environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for a licensed HVAC professional seeking predictable hours, exposure to large-scale institutional equipment and systems in a clean campus environment. This role offers minimal overtime demands, limited emergency call-ins, and no sales or commission-based pressures, allowing you to focus on your trade and technical expertise.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work on-site five days per week, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Conestoga's Skilled Trades campus, located at 25 Reuter Drive in Cambridge. Travel is required to support other Conestoga campus locations, including Brantford, Kitchener and Guelph.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain, update, and repair HVAC-related building support systems, including building environmental technologies such as digital controlled interfaces, heat recovery systems, motors, humidification systems, re-heat coils, heat pumps, cooling towers, rooftop heating and cooling systems, boilers, pneumatic and electronic controls, and variable frequency drives
  • Monitor, maintain, and repair refrigeration systems
  • Perform and document routine water treatment testing for heating, cooling, and cooling tower systems
  • Maintain accurate records, review test results, adjust chemical treatment parameters, and monitor automated water treatment equipment to ensure proper system operation and water quality
  • Perform scheduled predictive and preventative maintenance and repair on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment
  • Ensure code compliance of systems by performing inspections and testing
  • Prepare required documentation, update manuals, and provide information regarding work conducted for input into the computerized maintenance management system
  • Source information and parts by contacting vendors, technical libraries, and the internet to estimate material quantities and costs for projects and repair activities
  • Purchase required materials via purchase order or corporate credit card
  • Provide technical information and support to skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled staff as required
  • Install and commission new heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment
  • Monitor building systems through advanced computer programs and software
  • Monitor and inspect work performed by contractors, trades workers, and mechanics and report findings and or discrepancies to the Manager of Operations & Maintenance
Qualifications
  • Certificate of qualification as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (313A) is required
  • Gas Technician 2 (G2) certification is required; G1 certificate or willingness to obtain is preferred
  • Ozone Depletion Prevention Card (CFC certificate) is required
  • Minimum of five years of practical experience servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing old and new mechanical, electric, electronic, and computerized digital devices and systems
  • Working knowledge of the Energy Act, HVAC Code, Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Strong knowledge of BAS and large systems
  • Ability to foresee and interpret problems before they become serious
  • Ability to follow wiring schematic associated with a variety of types and makes of equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of blueprint reading from architectural to mechanical drawings
  • Ability to recognize and act on safety hazards
  • Understanding of building management control systems, including Pneumatic and Direct Digital Control (DDC)
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • A valid G driver's licence in good standing is required
  • Demonstrates flexibility in supporting after-hours emergency needs as situations arise
