Job summary

IKO Industries Ltd. in Calgary seeks a Laboratory Technician to join our state-of-the-art plant. You will support the development and implementation of a quality plan to drive continuous improvement and ensure finished product compliance with standards.

The role reports to the Quality Control Supervisor and involves testing in the lab, monitoring quality, and coordinating with production to address issues in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in a Science related field.
  • 1–3 years in industrial QA in manufacturing; familiarity with quality management systems.
  • Proficient with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Experience in lab environment and calibrating instruments is an asset.
  • Experience prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication to interact with frontline teams.
  • Self-initiative to work without supervision.
  • Team-oriented, assist QA/QC supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory tests on key QA parameters for finished products.
  • Monitor real-time product quality; resolve with production and escalate issues promptly.
  • Assess quality impact of new processes, methods, or equipment.
  • Implement ongoing quality improvement with cross-functional teams.
  • Support development and implementation of a quality plan for continuous improvement.
  • Measure QA metrics to identify improvements and track progress.
  • Identify and troubleshoot production quality issues.
  • Escalate QA issues to Quality and Plant management.
  • Ensure lab equipment calibration and upkeep; communicate spare parts needs.
  • Collect and analyze performance data against parameters.
  • Coordinate with shipping to sort and classify finished products per QA disposition.

We are currently seeking a Laboratory Technician in a permanent full-time position to join our team of skilled professionals based at our Calgary Plant. This state-of-the-art manufacturing plant produces premium roofing shingles in a high speed, continuous, asphalt shingle manufacturing process environment.

Reporting to the Quality Control Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of a quality plan to drive continuous improvement in plant performance, and assuring that finished product complies with company, industry and government standards.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform tests in the Laboratory on key parameters associated with the quality assurance of finished products
  • Monitors the quality of finished products in Real time, resolves with production team and escalates quality issues on a timely basis
  • Monitors quality impact of new production processes, methods, or equipment
  • Implements ongoing quality improvement processes and procedures working with interdepartmental teams and with the involvement of the production employees
  • Support the development and implementation of a quality plan to drive continuous improvement in plant performance
  • Measures quality assurance metrics to opportunities for improvement, progress on goals and accountability for performance
  • Identifies, troubleshoots and drives resolution of production quality deficiencies and problems
  • Escalate quality assurance issues to the Quality team and Plant management on a timely basis
  • Ensures that the Lab equipment is calibrated and in good condition and communicates material and spare requirements in advance
  • Collates and analyses performance data and charts against defined parameters
  • Works with shipping to ensure that outgoing products are sorted segregated, isolated and downgraded as per disposition from the quality team
Qualifications
  • Diploma or Degree in a Science related field
  • 1-3 years of experience in an industrial process manufacturing environment in a quality assurance role with hands-on experience with quality management systems preferred
  • Proficient with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Ability to lift 25lbs - Lifting bundles of shingles
  • Experience working in a Laboratory environment and calibrating troubleshooting instruments will be an asset
  • Ability to prioritize tasks a fast-paced environment where tests results may be required quickly
  • Communication: Ability to interact with Frontline teams
  • Self-initiative: Ability to work diligently without supervision
  • Team player: Able to help QA/QC supervisor with tasks assigned
