About the Role:
The Laboratory Supervisor, Engineering is responsible for designing, implementing, coordinating, testing, and maintaining laboratory components, including advanced digital design tools and rapid prototyping equipment such as 3D printers. The incumbent provides safe, quality laboratory demonstrations for students in the courses, supervising students and teaching assistants (TAs) in the execution. The Laboratory Supervisor, Engineering maintains equipment, coordinates purchases, and serves as a resource to ensure lab content is consistent with current understanding and technology.

As the Laboratory Supervisor, Engineering, you will:

  • Work with course instructors and faculty to design, develop and prepare lab demonstrations that are current and relevant to the course curricula;
  • Work closely with faculty, students, and other staff to support the department's educational goals;
  • Develop learning objectives, lab manuals, and technical presentation materials for laboratory demonstrations, commensurate with current technology and knowledge base;
  • Contribute to digital fabrication initiatives, including additive manufacturing and integration of CAD/CAM workflows into laboratory instruction;
  • Prepare, install, and dismantle lab setups, including configuration of mechanical and digital systems (e.g., motion platforms, 3D printers), ensuring labs reflect current course content and incorporate instructor and student feedback;
  • Perform demonstrations and experiments, directing students through laboratory activities by explaining, observing, correcting, and guiding throughout, ensuring quality and consistency in laboratory delivery;
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments, equipment logs, calibration logs, and inventory reports;
  • Manage laboratory resources and inspect laboratory equipment for operational problems;
  • Maintain and record student grades related to laboratory activities and assessments in the current electronic format (Brightspace);
  • Advise and resolve students on issues and concerns, remaining current on undergraduate policy and regulations, the Faculty Handbook, and Office of Registrar policy and procedures;
  • Facilitate the recruitment and selection of Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Student positions;
  • Schedule and direct the work of TAs (i.e., coordinate and assign teaching duties within a lab section, train, supervise, provide direction, etc.).

Key Skills and Experience:

  • MSc or BSc degree in Engineering and experience as a laboratory technician;
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and laboratory techniques;
  • Excellent technical skills and proficiency in using laboratory equipment, including CAD software (Fusion 360, AutoCAD) and additive manufacturing systems
  • Commitment to laboratory safety standards and procedures;
  • Excellent understanding of course materials with related experience teaching at the University level, including familiarity with the administrative program requirements;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively explain, observe, correct, and guide students in a laboratory environment;
  • Proficiency in standard computer programs and software, including Microsoft Office, Gradebook, and Brightspace (or equivalent);
  • Knowledge of and training in chemical safety and transportation of dangerous goods;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including discretion, and confidentiality;
  • Ability to develop laboratory exercises that complement course content, utilizing current technology, and aligning with student knowledge base;
  • Strong multi-tasking, prioritization, and organizational skills, with the ability to adhere to strict deadlines and keep accurate records;
  • Experience developing and delivering lab-based instructional content in engineering design and mechanical systems;
  • Ability to solve problems in ad-hoc situations in a logical and effective manner.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Holds a P.Eng. designation;
  • Experience configuring intelligent motion systems (e.g., Beckhoff XPlanar, TwinCAT, etc.); and
  • Experience as a laboratory technician in an academic setting.

Salary and Total Rewards:

  • Job Grade (M), Salary Scale ($73,245-$118,776)*;
  • Target Hiring Range: $73,245-$82,400;

This is a permanent position that includes:

*The final salary is based on experience, internal equity, and budget considerations within the target hiring range.
