Job summary

Alberta Health Services (AHS) seeks a Medical Laboratory Assistant I at Devon General Hospital to join a dynamic clinical laboratory team. You will perform specimen collection, testing and reporting with focus on accuracy and safety.

Responsibilities include accessioning in EPIC Beaker, ECGs, urinalysis and specimen transport. This is a 0.60 FTE day-shift role with potential evenings/nights, union HSAA, and a temporary PT benefits status.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
• Successful demonstration of laboratory skills and data entry; ability to work in a team with strong time management and prioritization.
• Adaptable and flexible in a changing laboratory environment with interruptions.
• Listen, understand and respond clearly in person, over the phone or in writing.
• Beaker EPIC experience is preferred within last year.

Responsibilities

• Collect blood specimens from adults and children using macro and micro phlebotomy techniques.
• Perform ECGs and complete urinalysis; process and test specimens.
• Accession patient information into the EPIC Beaker system; dispatch and transport specimens and slides.
• Procurement, handling, processing and testing of specimens; report results.
• Troubleshoot problematic specimens and perform reception duties as needed.

Job description

The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting, processing and reporting quality specimens for analysis. The Medical Laboratory Assistant I primary responsibilities include collection of blood specimens from adults and children using macro and micro phlebotomy techniques, performing ECGs, complete urinalysis, accessioning patient information into the laboratory EPIC computer system, processing samples, transport of specimens and slides, troubleshooting problem specimens and reception duties.This is a multisite position in which shifts will be primarily at Devon Laboratory. Shifts at WestView and Leduc will be only as needed to support operations. Stony Plain, Devon and Leduc are all towns in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region of Alberta, that is surrounded by Parkland County. Stony Plain is approximately 40 minutes West of Edmonton adjacent to the City of Spruce Grove and sits on Treaty 6 land. Devon is approximately 26 km southwest of Edmonton and Leduc is immediately south of the City of Edmonton.Currently position is day shift only, but may include evenings, nights and weekends in the future.

Required Qualifications:

Additional Required Qualifications:

Successful demonstration of laboratory skills and data entry is required. Working within a team environment, good interpersonal skills, effective time management and the ability to set priorities are necessary. The successful candidate must be adaptable and flexible within an environment of change and interruptions. The candidate selected will have the ability to listen, comprehend and orally respond to or relay information, directions or questions in person, over the phone or in writing in an accurate, clear and concise manner. The successful candidate must represent Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in a respectful, professional and courteous manner. Formal urinalysis education and recent urinalysis experience within last two years. Phlebotomy experience and performing ECG within the last two years.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with the Beaker module of EPIC , within last year.
