Job summary

Alberta Precision Labs in Westlock is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant I to support inpatient and outpatient collections, specimen handling and processing, including send-outs, urinalysis, ECG and Holter monitoring.

You will perform a range of laboratory duties with a focus on safety, accuracy and high-quality service, with a shift pattern of two weeks. Salary ranges from CAD 25.91 to 32.30 per hour for regular full-time employment.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited MLA program or equivalent.
• Equivalency may include MLT/CLXT programs or on-the-job phlebotomy training with six months to complete.

Responsibilities

• Procure, handle, process, dispatch and test specimens.
• Perform urinalysis, ECG and Holter monitoring; report results.
• Provide high quality service in the clinical laboratory and maintain safety.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications

Equivalency is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and/or Combined Laboratory and Xray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and/or MLT or CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation. Internal APL Employees who have completed a combination of formal training and/or on-the-job experience directly related to the representative duties and job responsibilities in the MLA I job posting. Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered. Upon hire, you will be required to complete on-the-job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility. You will be required to complete these training requirements within six (6) months of hire, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collectiveagreement.

Preferred Qualifications

Medical laboratory assistant (or equivalent) experience in a hospital setting. Experience performing urinalysis, phlebotomy, ECGs and Holter Monitors.
