Job summary

Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Cold Lake seeks a Medical Laboratory Assistant I to support the clinical laboratory by handling, processing and testing specimens, and by performing preanalytical tasks including phlebotomy and reception duties.

The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment under Laboratory Medicine, assisting with accessioning and ECGs, serving diverse patient groups and contributing to quality specimen collection and processing.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
• Phlebotomy experience is required.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage priorities while maintaining professionalism.

Responsibilities

• Perform preanalytical laboratory tasks including phlebotomy for adults, children and infants.
• Accession patient specimens, troubleshoot problematic samples and perform ECGs.

Job description

Cold Lake is a city in northeastern Alberta, Canada and is named after the lake nearby. Named after the Cree legend of Kinosoo, Kinosoo Beach in the Town of Cold Lake was voted one of Canada's Top 25 Beaches in 2008 by Canadian Geographic Magazine. The water is clear and shallow in marked swimming area which makes the beach popular with families. Cold Lake is situated near many campgrounds due to its proximity to the lake. The Provincial campground boasts a wilderness trail system, a beach, boat launch and a powered section. Nearby Meadow Lake Provincial Park to the east, across the border in Saskatchewan, has facilities similar to Cold Lake Provincial Park. Kinosoo Beach is a favorite destination during the hot summer months between June and August. The Iron Horse Trail, a recreational trail situated on a former railway line, and cold lake museums, can also be found in Cold Lake. Recreational pastimes include, hockey, lacrosse, martial arts, rugby, soccer, swimming, bowling, curling, gymnastics, golf, horseback riding, the rodeo, dance, sailing, boating, fishing, downhill skiing, roller derby, volleyball, baseball, and figure skating.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications

Phlebotomy experience is required. Working within a team environment, good interpersonal skills, effective time management and the ability to set priorities are necessary. Excellent communication skills both written and oral are required. Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, be adaptable and flexible within an environment of change and interruptions. Must be able to represent Laboratory Medicine in a respectful, professional, and courteous manner. The primary responsibilities of the Laboratory Assistant I include performing all aspects of the preanalytical path of workflow including phlebotomy for adults, children and infants using both macro and micro techniques, accessioning patient specimens, troubleshooting problem specimens, performing ECGs, and reception duties. The successful candidate will provide support to the lab by collecting and processing quality specimens for analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience performing macroscopic and microscopic urinalysis testing. EPIC LIS experience is preferred.
