We are hiring one (1) temporary, full-time Assistant, Laboratory position based at the Rossdale Water Treatment Plant and Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant in Edmonton, AB.

What you’d be responsible for

Reporting to the Manager of Laboratory Customer Service & Informatics, the Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Safe operation of EPCOR vehicles, including extensive city driving
  • Cleaning and preparing glassware following standardized procedures
  • Maintaining sufficient material supplies for the laboratory
  • Collecting samples from reservoirs, distribution systems, and treatment plants safely and promptly
  • Sampling from various locations within Edmonton’s water system and wastewater plants, complying with regulatory standards
  • Preparing and packing samples for external testing
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment such as deionized water units and dishwashers
  • Delivering samples to laboratories and other agencies as needed
  • Documenting samples and entering data into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Managing laboratory inventory and stock
  • Shipping and receiving laboratory materials
  • Running errands for supplies and sample pickups at locations like bus stations and airports
  • Performing special project sampling, including residential samples as required
What’s required to be successful
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent; Science/Chemistry/Biology/Physics 30 considered an asset
  • 1-2 years of laboratory experience
  • Experience operating lab equipment such as dishwashers and deionizers
  • Training in laboratory safety (WHMIS, TDG) is an asset
  • Basic understanding of water/wastewater treatment and distribution systems is an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License with no more than six demerits; a 5-year commercial abstract may be required
  • Ability to meet physical demands, including lifting up to 20kg (45lbs); medical and drug testing clearance may be necessary
  • Security background and reference checks may be required
