We are hiring one (1) temporary , full-time Assistant, Laboratory position, working out of the Rossdale Water Treatment Plant and Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant in Edmonton, AB!

What you’d be responsible for

Reporting to the Manager , Laboratory Customer Service & Informatics , the Laboratory Assistant will be accountable for, but not limited to:

  • Track record of safe operation of EPCOR vehicles. Extensive driving across the city and at EPCOR sites is a core part of this role
  • Cleaning and preparing routine and specialized glassware for the lab using standardized procedures and protocols
  • Ensuring necessary material supplies are consis tently available to the l aboratory team
  • C ollecting reservoir, distribution, and Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant sampl es in a safe and timely manner
  • Collecting water samples from businesses, fire st ations and other locations within the City of Edmonton water system and Wastewater Treatment Plant s using standardized procedures to meet Alberta Environment and Protected Areas R egulatory r equirements
  • Preparing and packing sample bottles for commercial and external site water t esting
  • Maintaining critical laboratory support equipment , such as deionized water units and dishwasher s
  • Delivering samples to laboratories for EPCOR, Public Health an d other businesses as required
  • Preparing the necessary documentation and p aperwork for samples and entering information into a Laboratory Inform ation Management S ystem (LIMS)
  • Organizing the laboratory inventory flow and keeping track of laboratory stock .
  • A rranging the shipping and re ceiving of laboratory materials
  • P erforming errands for materials and supplies, and picking up samples from locations suc h as bus stations and airports
  • Performing occasional special project sampling, including samples from residential homes .

What’s required to be successful
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
    • Science/Chemistry/Bio/or Physics 30 considered an asset.
  • 1- 2 years of experience in a l aboratory environment
  • Previous experience operating laboratory equipment , such as dishwashers and deionizers
  • Training in laboratory safety including WHMIS and TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods) considered an asset.
  • A basic understanding of water and wastewater treatment as well as distribution and collection systems is considered an asset.
  • Basic computer skills and demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office S uite (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License with no more than six demerits
    • 5 years ’ Commercial abstract may be required
  • Demonstrated capability to meet the physical demands of the position (clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required) which include lifting/carrying weights up to 20kg (45lbs) on a daily basis
  • Security Background Clearance (criminal check) and professional reference check may be required.

You are highly motivated, demonstrate a strong work ethic, and possess an ability to work effectively within a team dynamic. You can manage conflicting priorities throughout the day with minimal supervision and take initiative when completing tasks in a timely manner and to a high standard.

Wage: S tarting at $28.39 per hour (Final Wage and Step will be determined at the time of selection and are subject to change based on the ratification of the new Collective Agreement.)

Hours of work: 75 hours bi-weekly
