The Laboratory Assistant performs specimen collection, preparation and testing, and performs related clerical functions.
What You’ll Do
- Collect blood and other specimens, label with relevant information according to Fraser Health policies, including sweat, breath, capillary gases, venous and capillary blood samples, and assist in fine needle aspirations.
- Prepare specimens for analysis by centrifuging, aliquoting, and distributing specimens, and assist with gross exams. Stain, mount, and label slides.
- Perform clerical duties including data entry, communicating test results, and handling inquiries from health team members.
- Operate and maintain equipment such as fridges, incubators, autoclaves, and water baths, and report issues as per procedures.
- Prepare reagents, media, and collection materials; receive, store, and ship specimens, and handle pre- and post-analytical storage and disposal.
- Load specimens onto barcode-enhanced automated and semi-automated equipment.
- Perform laboratory tests like urine dipsticks, glucose tests, occult blood, and pregnancy tests, and plate microbiology specimens.
- Maintain a clean, safe work area, stock supplies, and perform inventory checks.
- Schedule appointments, verify patient registration, and assist with ECG testing.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12 and a recognized Lab Assistant training program.
- One year of recent, related experience or equivalent education, training, and experience.
- Knowledge of the impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples, Indigenous-specific mandates, and a commitment to anti-racism and cultural safety.
- Understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments related to Indigenous rights and anti-racism.

- Understanding of Indigenous-specific and systemic racism, with initiatives to promote a safe and inclusive environment.
- Awareness of social, economic, and political realities affecting Indigenous Peoples and equity groups, and familiarity with relevant legislative frameworks.

- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Physical ability to perform duties.
- Organizational skills and equipment operation knowledge.
- Typing speed of 25 w.p.m.
