Laboratory Assistant

BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) Labs, Vancouver, BC
The Laboratory Assistant at BCCDC performs general laboratory procedures and clerical functions such as accessioning specimens, preparing specimens for testing, preparing culture media and stock solutions, data entry, receiving and relaying phone messages, producing labels, and sorting and distributing mail.
What you'll do
  1. Receive incoming specimens and requisitions, check for accuracy and completeness, assign laboratory numbers, and assemble into work batches. Contact clients for missing information and correct errors.
  2. Prepare specimens for testing, including staining slides, performing concentration procedures, inoculating media, and placing in incubators following established procedures.
  3. Prepare culture media and stock solutions by weighing dehydrated media and chemicals, dissolving, measuring pH, sterilizing, and dispensing.
  4. Monitor supplies and equipment, take inventories, liaise with users, prepare requisitions, and maintain stock control records. Communicate with supervisors about inventory issues.
  5. Receive and check orders, verify invoices, stock shelves, check storage conditions, and coordinate with suppliers to resolve discrepancies.

  • Completion of Grade 12 and a recognized Lab Assistant training program.
  • One year's recent, relevant experience or equivalent education, training, and experience.

Additionally, you should demonstrate knowledge of the impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples, including mandates related to Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility, and show a commitment to anti-racism and equity in healthcare settings. Familiarity with legislative obligations such as the TRC Calls to Action, UNDRIP, and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is essential.
