Location: Port Moody, Eagle Ridge Hospital BC
The Laboratory Assistant performs specimen collection, preparation, testing, and related clerical functions.
What You’ll Do
- Collect blood and other specimens, label with relevant information according to Fraser Health policies, including sweat, breath, capillary gases, venous and capillary blood samples, and assist in fine needle aspirations with clerical support.
- Prepare specimens for analysis by centrifuging, aliquoting, and prioritizing distribution for Microbiology, Pathology, and Cytology, including assisting with gross exams. Stain, mount, and label slides.
- Perform clerical duties such as data entry, communicating test results, and handling inquiries from health team members.
- Maintain equipment, perform temperature checks, and report issues as per procedures.
- Prepare reagents, media, and collection materials; receive, store, ship specimens, and handle pre- and post-analytical storage, including discarding specimens per protocols.
- Load specimens on barcode-enhanced automated and semi-automated equipment.
- Conduct laboratory tests like urine dipsticks, glucose tests, occult blood, pregnancy tests, and microbiology plating.
- Keep a clean and safe work environment, stock supplies, and perform inventory management.
- Schedule appointments, verify patient registration, and assist with ECG testing.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12 and recognized Lab Assistant training.
- One year of recent, related experience or equivalent education, training, and experience.
- Knowledge of Indigenous-specific mandates, cultural safety, and humility, including understanding systemic racism and colonial impacts on Indigenous Peoples.
- Understanding legislative obligations and commitments such as TRC Calls to Action, UNDRIP, and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
