Job summary

ALS is seeking a Lab Analyst to join the Trace Organics Sample Prep team, preparing environmental samples for instrumental analysis and maintaining production, quality control, and turnaround times.

Your responsibilities include leading digestion and extraction, processing samples, documenting work, monitoring inventory, and supporting SOP reviews, all while following QA/QC requirements and safety policies in a 24/7 operation.

Qualifications

  • Degree or technical diploma in chemistry or related science discipline.
  • 6 months to 1 year of experience in a fast-paced production/preparation environment.
  • Good English communication (auditory, verbal, written, and reading).

Responsibilities

  • Lead digestion and extraction of samples following documented methods.
  • Perform sample processing (screening, homogenization, sub-sampling) including bio-hazardous samples.
  • Carry out concentration, cleanup, submission and derivatization procedures.
  • Schedule and plan work activities, maintain records and documentation.

About the Position:

Working as part of the Trace Organics Sample Prep team, the Lab Analyst is responsible for preparing environmental samples for instrumental analysis including maintaining adequate production, quality control, and turnaround times.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Lead digestion and extraction of basic and complex samples following documented specific methods and/or procedures;

  • Perform any required sample processing (e.g. screening, homogenization, sub-sampling, etc.) including work related to bio‑hazardous samples;

  • Perform sample concentration, clean‑up, submission, and derivatization procedures on all analyses;

  • Carry out all required work scheduling and planning activities;

  • Carry out all required record‑keeping & documentation;

  • Monitor inventory of spare parts and consumables;

  • Assist with training;

  • Review and provide input on SOPs;

  • Follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirements and adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;

  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Good English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);

  • Basic user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), with basic computer skills;

  • Accurate and efficient data entry skills;

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately in a fast‑paced environment;

  • Well organized, with the ability to meet strict deadlines;

  • Strong attention to detail;

  • Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to understand and carry out detailed instructions;

Required Qualifications
  • Degree or technical diploma in chemistry or related science discipline;

  • 6 months to 1 year of experience working in a fast‑paced, production, and/or preparation environment.

Physical Demands
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;

  • This position requires a person to stand up to 8 hours per day;

  • This position requires a person to lift up to 30 lbs. on a regular basis and carry for short distances;

  • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;

  • This position requires a person to be clean‑shaven in order to safely wear a solvent respirator;

  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

  • An estimated hourly pay of $23.61CAD at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job‑related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.
