Lab Research Assistant
Bayer Canada - Crop Science Division is seeking a Double Haploid Laboratory Assistant to work in our high throughput Double Haploid Lab. This is a unique opportunity to work with leading edge technology and talented research scientists seeking to deliver the best products in Bayer’s canola pipeline.
This is an 11 month temporary position based out of Winnipeg, Canada.
What you will do:
- Execute laboratory operations to meet quality and timeline targets
- Assist in all aspects of the production of Canola doubled haploids using good laboratory practices and aseptic technique.
- This includes but is not limited to collection and sizing buds, microspore isolation, embryo culture, maintenance of embryos, making media (including working with toxic chemicals), transferring embryos onto solid media, tissue sampling, analyzing plant material, and transplanting
- Maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment
- Actively participate in process improvement initiatives
- Follow all Quality Management System (QMS) and Health Safety and Environment (HSE) procedures and promote implementation within the DH and QA programs
- Maintain tidiness & orderliness within the workplace
- Participate in task-related document creation and process review for job-related activities
- Assist in other projects & perform other duties as required
- Supervise and train temporary employees as required
Who you are:
- Degree or diploma in agricultural/biological science or related field
- Strong computer software literacy, with experience using Microsoft Office, including SharePoint and Teams, and experience writing and maintaining macros
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of double haploid production
- Highly skilled with aseptic technique
- Willingness to work with Colchicine
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Valid Driver’s license desired
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary/multicultural research team
- Highly motivated, results oriented, with the ability to work with people individually or in a team to gain commitment to achieving those results
- Possess strong ability to work accurately and pay attention to detail
- Strong organization skills and ability to prioritize daily tasks
- Flexible attitude and ability to learn new procedures
- Ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear, concise, and actionable manner
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary/multicultural research team
- Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
