Job summary

Del Van Gorder School in Faro, Yukon is seeking a Kaska Language Teacher (FTE 1.0) to begin August 20, 2026. The role involves delivering Kaska language and culture programs, adapting curriculum for diverse learners, and collaborating with school staff, families and the community to support learner success.

The ideal candidate will hold Yukon Native Language Centre certification or equivalent, demonstrate strong language proficiency, and be committed to advancing Indigenous language

Qualifications

  • Completion of Yukon Native Language Centre certificate/diploma program or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated language proficiency (read, write and speak) to deliver the Kaska language and culture program at the elementary/secondary school level.
  • Extensive knowledge and awareness of Yukon First Nations/Ross River Dena Council/Liard First Nation culture and education issues.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Kaska language and culture as a second language.
  • Adapt and modify curriculum to address diverse student needs to ensure success.
  • Collaborate with staff, parents and caregivers and participate in staff meetings and Aboriginal Language Teacher professional development.
  • Mentor a language trainee for 2 years if required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Completion of Yukon Native Language Centre certificate/diploma program or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated language proficiency (read, write and speak) to deliver the Kaska language and culture program at the elementary/secondary school level;
  • Demonstrated and ongoing commitment to improve language proficiency;
  • Extensive knowledge and awareness of Yukon First Nations/Ross River Dena Council/Liard First Nation culture, traditional practices, values and beliefs as well as a good understanding of the past and current issues in education, heritage and languages with a view to past, the present and the future.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Strong interest and ability to teach the Kaska language and culture as a second language;
  • Strong classroom management skills;
  • Ability to adapt and modify curriculum to address students’ needs and gifts to ensure that all students experience success in this program;
  • Ability to work as a team member and a willingness and enthusiasm to participate in all staff meetings, school wide functions and initiatives, as well as Aboriginal Language Teacher professional development;
  • Ability to connect and collaborate with school-based staff, parents and/or caregiver;
  • Willingness to actively promote Kaska language and culture within school programming and environment;
  • Willingness to mentor a language trainee for 2 years, if required.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
  • Yukon Teacher Certification; learn about the certification process here. A Letter of Permission is often provided for those who have the language skills but do not have a teaching certificate. This will be discussed further with the successful candidate.
  • Yukon First Nations 101 , to be completed at your first opportunity.
