Job summary

The John Howard Society of Prince Edward Island (JHSPEI) seeks a dedicated Justice Caseworker to provide case management, advocacy, and transition support for clients within provincial correctional facilities. Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Human Services or related field or a high school diploma with relevant experience.
  • Experience in case management, advocacy, crisis response, and community referrals.
  • Familiarity with PEI housing, income assistance, health, and social supports is an asset.
  • Ability to document accurately and maintain client confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized case management and client-centred support in institutional settings.
  • Complete assessments, identify needs, risks, and supports for each client.
  • Develop goal-oriented case plans with clients and coordinate transitions to the community.
  • Assist with pre-release, discharge, and transition planning.
  • Help clients secure housing and connect to community supports.
  • Advocate with government, health, housing, and justice systems on behalf of clients.
  • Attend case conferences, discharge planning, and interagency meetings as required.
  • Respond to crisis situations and maintain professional boundaries and documentation.
  • Ensure data collection and reporting needs are met in collaboration with the admin team.

Position: Full-Time | Contract: 12 Months, with possibility of renewal subject to funding

Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:30 AM‑4:30 PM

Work Location: In Person

Position Overview
The John Howard Society of Prince Edward Island is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Justice Caseworker to provide case management, advocacy, and transition support to individuals accessing services within provincial correctional facilities. The Caseworker will support individuals experiencing complex and intersecting challenges, including housing instability, homelessness, mental health concerns, substance use, poverty, and justice‑system involvement. The position will work closely with facility staff, community agencies, government departments, and other service providers to support clients with their immediate needs and successful transition back into the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized case management and client‑centered support within institutional settings.
  • Complete assessments and identify client needs, risks, strengths, and available supports.
  • Develop individualized, goal‑oriented case plans in partnership with clients.
  • Provide pre‑release, discharge, and transition planning.
  • Assist clients with securing housing and connecting to community supports.
  • Support access to identification, income assistance, health care, mental health and addictions services, transportation, and other essential resources.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients when navigating government, health, justice, housing, and community systems.
    Establish strong working relationships with correctional, mental health, addictions, health, housing, and community service providers.
  • Participate in case conferences, discharge planning meetings, and interagency meetings as required.
  • Respond appropriately to crisis situations and identify when additional intervention or support is required.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and accurate client documentation.
  • Consistently complete and maintain accurate, professional client documentation in the HIFIS database within established deadlines.
  • Work in conjunction with the data and admin team to ensure data collection to meet JHS data collection and reporting needs
  • Ability to complete and submit required documentation accurately and within established deadlines.
  • Follow JHSPEI policies and all applicable facility security, confidentiality, and operational procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Post‑secondary education in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Criminology, Addictions, or a related field OR a high school diploma combined with relevant social service experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years of case management, social services, corrections, mental health, addictions, or related experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in correctional, institutional, health, addictions, shelter, or community settings is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of PEI housing, income assistance, health, mental health, addictions, justice, and community resources is considered an asset.
  • Strong assessment, advocacy, communication, problem‑solving, conflict‑resolution, and crisis‑management skills.
  • Ability to build respectful relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accurate documentation.
    Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and electronic databases.
  • ASIST, Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention, CPR/First Aid, or similar training is considered an asset.

Employment Requirements

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and any additional security screening required by partner facilities.
  • Valid PEI driver’s license.
  • Reliable, insured transportation and ability to travel throughout PEI
  • Ability to comply with facility policies, security requirements, and access protocols.
  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada.
