Job summary

Activo Inc. is seeking a motivated Junior Telecommunications System Specialist to support nationwide projects from Ontario and travel across Canada. The role is full-time with an anticipated two-year term for a national project and requires Government of Canada Secret (Level II) clearance.

The candidate will install equipment, diagnose performance issues, read drawings, and document modifications. Extensive travel and safety-focused work are essential to success in this position.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunications, or Lineman Technician training from a recognized institution.
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience installing telecommunications equipment, cabling, and related systems.
  • Experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining telecommunications equipment and associated infrastructure.
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, schematics, and installation documentation.
  • Experience documenting equipment modifications, design changes, and technical activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in and complete mock-up installations for standards verifications and installation preparations.
  • Travel across Canada for deployments and stay away from home location for extended durations.
  • Read engineering documents and installation drawings and use test equipment during installation tasks.
  • Install cables, racks, and telecom equipment per configuration practices and procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair installed devices and telecommunications cabling during tasks.
  • Enter and complete logs and reports.

Junior Telecommunication System Specialist

About the Role:
  • Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
  • Project Term: Two (2) years
  • Compensation: $35 per hour plus benefits
  • Travel Requirement: Extensive Travel Required
  • Government of Canada Secret (Level II) Clearance Required

We are seeking a motivated and safety-focused Junior Telecommunications System Specialist to join our team on a full-time permanent basis. The successful candidate will primarily support telecommunications projects in the Trenton, Ontario area and will also be required to travel to project sites across Canada as operational requirements dictate.

The initial assignment is expected to support a national project with an anticipated duration of approximately two (2) years. Following completion of the project, the successful candidate will continue employment with the Company and may be assigned to other projects and locations based on business requirements.

The successful candidate will have:
  • Experience in the installation of telecommunications equipment, related cabling and systems.
  • Experience in diagnosing performance deficiencies, troubleshooting and repairing telecommunication equipment and related cabling and systems.
  • Experience reading and interpreting drawings and technical schematics. As well, demonstrate experience in documenting modifications and/or changes.
Qualifications — Education & Experience
  • Completion of Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunications, or Lineman Technician training from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience installing telecommunications equipment, cabling, and related systems.
  • Experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining telecommunications equipment and associated infrastructure.
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, schematics, and installation documentation.
  • Experience documenting equipment modifications, design changes, and technical activities.
Required Certifications
  • WHMIS Certification.
  • Working at Heights Certification.
  • Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training (4 Steps).
  • Ability to safely work on ladders and elevated work platforms; project-specific training may be required.
Safety – Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

All technicians are required to wear and maintain approved PPE in accordance with company and customer safety requirements, including:

  • CSA-approved safety footwear
  • Approved hard hat
  • Safety eyewear
  • High-visibility clothing
Technical Knowledge & Skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and other commonly used business software
  • Mechanically Inclined
  • Must be able to understand and carry out instructions well
  • Able to read & understand floor plans
  • Certified to work on ladders and man lifts
  • WHMIS certified
  • Understanding of OH&SA safety standards
  • Fully understands colour code recognition
  • Fully understands pin outs (EIA/TIA standards)
  • Advanced workstation & communication closet termination techniques
  • Understanding of all Category 5E, 6 UTP, 6A UTP & STP standards
  • Advanced cable installation skills
  • Basic troubleshooting skills
  • Understanding copper testing equipment and documentation procedure
Additional Requirements
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain Government of Canada Secret (Level II) Security Clearance.
  • Due to frequent travel requirements, a valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence and an acceptable driving record are required.
  • Ability to travel throughout Canada and remain away from home for extended periods, which may exceed ninety (90) consecutive days depending on project requirements and operational needs.
  • Ability to safely perform physically demanding installation activities, including: working at heights; climbing ladders; operating elevated work platforms; lifting, carrying, and moving equipment and materials; working in telecommunications rooms, construction environments, and other field locations.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in and complete mock-up installations for the purpose of standards verifications, and as part of installation preparations
  • Adhere to procedures and information as defined in such documents as Technical Orders, and the Design and Installation Procedure for Communications Facilities
  • Receive and prepare shipments of parts and associated documentation
  • Travel across Canada, and remain away from home location for extended durations, which may exceed ninety (90) consecutive days, depending on the complexity and operational requirements of assigned tasks
  • Attend meetings as required to understand, plan, and complete installation
  • Read engineering documents/drawings, Technical Data Packages and various other types of visual media
  • Use a broad range of industry recognized test equipment (digital multimeters, spectrum analyzers, volt meters, amp meters, etc.) during installation tasks
  • Use various power tools, saws, drills, and hydraulic loading equipment
  • Install various cables/conductors, wires, wiring harnesses, related control equipment, and equipment racks in accordance with defined configuration practices and procedures
  • Troubleshoot and repair installed devices and communications cabling during an installation task
  • Manage local tools, spares, and equipment for each deployment
  • Enter and complete logs and reports.
