Job summary

McElhanney Ltd. in Calgary, AB is seeking a Junior Construction Inspector to support on-site inspection for municipal and transportation projects across Alberta. You will work with seasoned inspectors and project managers to gain hands-on field experience.

The role requires outdoors work, travel to project sites, and commitment to safety and quality. Responsibilities include daily reports, QA, and adherence to project specs and contractual requirements.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of construction inspection experience on municipal, transportation, or civil infrastructure projects.
  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field, or a degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Eligible for or currently holding a professional designation such as CET, AScT, P.Tech, or E.I.T. in Alberta is asset.
  • Understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Ability to identify construction deficiencies and communicate findings effectively.
  • Survey experience and survey QA experience are strong assets.
  • Materials testing experience is considered an asset.
  • Willingness to travel for project assignments, including local travel, day trips, and extended stays at remote project sites for periods of several weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site construction inspection to monitor the quality and progress of work being performed.
  • Complete daily inspection reports and maintain accurate project records.
  • Learn and apply project specifications, standards, and contract requirements during construction activities.
  • Understand site hazards and follow safe work procedures at all times.
  • Report inspection issues, deficiencies, or concerns to senior inspection staff and project managers.
  • Track quantities and assist with progress payment documentation.
  • Monitor construction progress and communicate project updates as required.
  • Assist in identifying field and design issues and support the implementation of corrective measures.
  • Liaise professionally with contractors, clients, utility companies, and other stakeholders during construction operations.
  • Support materials testing, quality assurance activities, and field measurements as required.
  • Assist with survey verification and quality assurance activities where applicable.
  • Understand, commit to, and fulfill responsibilities under the McElhanney Quality Management System, ISO 9001, and all client quality, safety, and environmental management systems.

Job description

The Opportunity

McElhanney has an exciting opportunity for a Junior Construction Inspector to join our team in Calgary, AB. In this role, you will support the delivery of construction inspection services on a variety of municipal and transportation infrastructure projects throughout Alberta. Working alongside experienced inspectors and project managers, you will gain valuable hands-on experience while contributing to the successful delivery of projects for our clients.

This role is ideal for a motivated and detail-oriented individual who enjoys working outdoors, collaborating with project teams, and gaining valuable field experience to build a career in engineering. The successful candidate will be based in Calgary and must be willing to travel to project sites throughout the region, including local assignments, day trips, and extended out-of-town projects that may require spending several weeks on-site at a time. In this role, you will play an important role in ensuring construction projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements and specifications.

What You'll Bring

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and a clean driving record.
What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $85,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual's education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
