Job summary

Startec Compression & Process is seeking an Apprentice Machinist for the dayshift at the Shepard Shop facility in Calgary, AB. The role offers a 4-day workweek, 10-hour days, and overtime as required.

You will collaborate with Production Leadership, Drafting/Engineering, and shop floor staff to meet schedules while ensuring quality and safety across operations.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of machining experience.
  • Experience with manual programming and CAM software (Mastercam).
  • Ability to run both CNC and manual machines.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Collaborative team player with positive engagement.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; both written and verbal.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Operate lathe and milling machines; set up and run tasks.
  • Take precise measurements and select tooling and settings.
  • Read and interpret drawings to meet specifications.
  • Monitor production quality and document defects.
  • Maintain a safe, clean work area and enforce safety policies.

Job description

ABOUT US:

Startec Compression & Process is dedicated to providing innovative solutions to meet your unique challenges and opportunities. We are an integrated project and engineering equipment fabricator specializing in the modularized design and packaging of process, refrigeration, and rotating equipment solutions.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting an Apprentice Machinist to work on our dayshift at our Shepard Shop facility (9423 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary, AB T2C 4R6).

Shift 5:50-4:20 (4 days/week,10 hours/day). Overtime is as required.

The successful candidate will work with the Production Leadership Team, Drafting/Engineering, and shop floor employees to coordinate efforts to meet production schedules, quality, and safety requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Journeyperson Certificate (Red Seal Interprovincial preferred)
  • 5+ years of machining experience
  • Experience with manual programming and CAM software (Mastercam)
  • Ability to run both CNC and Manual machines
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Collaborative team player with positive engagement
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; both written and verbal
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):
PRODUCTION (Weighting 80%)
Machine Setup & Operation
  • Operates and maintains lathe and milling machines.
  • Takes precise measurements for cutting or shaping.
  • Selects appropriate machine and settings for a given task.
  • Plans proper sequence of tasks to complete the assignment.
Quality Control
  • Reviews drawings, instructions, blueprints, or samples to ensure accurate production.
  • Monitors production, adjusts feed, and other settings as necessary.
  • Checks output for quality assurance and documents defects.
SAFETY (Weighting 20%)
Maintenance
  • Identifies need for and performs machine maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area.
  • Promotes and enforces a safety-first culture, ensuring compliance with safety policies and conducting regular briefings.
Documentation
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
  • Ensures accurate documentation of production, quality, and safety records.
