Job summary

Valard Construction is seeking a Powerline Technicians Foreman/Foreperson to join our team in Drayton Valley, Whitecourt and/or Edmonton, AB. The role leads installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground distribution systems, often at heights or in trenches, with travel to Alberta locations up to 14 days at a time.

Reporting to the Operations Lead, you will mentor apprentices, enforce safety standards, read drawings, and coordinate with engineers and crews to complete projects

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading power distribution work crews.
• Strong knowledge of electrical theory, powerline construction practices, and safety procedures.
• Proficient in the use of locating, splicing, and testing equipment.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to work on-call and respond to emergency situations when required.

Responsibilities

• Lead installation, splicing, terminating, and maintenance of overhead and underground power cables, vaults, conduits, and related equipment.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to apprentices and other crew members, conduct performance reviews.
• Audit construction operations for compliance and enforce equipment maintenance schedules.
• Perform troubleshooting, fault locating, and repairs on distribution systems.
• Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment such as cable pulling rigs, fault locators, splicing kits, and test instruments.
• Conduct switching and grounding of high-voltage equipment in accordance with safety standards.

Job description

Our Distribution group is currently seeking Powerline Technicians (PLT) Foreman / Foreperson to join our team, based in Drayton Valley, Whitecourt and/or Edmonton, AB. Reporting to the Operations Lead, these positions lead the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems, working with cables, conduits, and associated equipment like transformers and splicing tools. In this position you will install, troubleshoot, and repair power lines, often working at heights or in confined spaces such as trenches. Please Note: This position may require local travel to locations within Alberta for up to 14 days at a time. We also have a PPE and FR Clothing program for our employees to ensure you have what you need to work safely at all times.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead installation, splicing, terminating, and maintenance of overhead and underground power cables, vaults, conduits, and related equipment
• Provide mentorship and guidance to apprentices and other crew members, conduct performance reviews
• Audit construction operations for compliance and enforce equipment maintenance schedules
• Perform troubleshooting, fault locating, and repairs on distribution systems
• Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment such as cable pulling rigs, fault locators, splicing kits, and test instruments
• Conduct switching and grounding of high-voltage equipment in accordance with utility safety standards and work procedures
• Read and interpret construction drawings, single-line diagrams, and underground cable maps
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations, utility codes, and company standards
• Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and other crew members to complete projects efficiently
• Respond to emergency outages and perform restoration work in a timely manner
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and test results

Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certification

• Proven experience leading power distribution work crews
• Strong knowledge of electrical theory, powerline construction practices, and safety procedures
• Proficient in the use of locating, splicing, and testing equipment
• Valid driver's license
