Job summary

Pacifica Housing is seeking a part-time Janitor in Nanaimo to maintain safety, cleanliness, and sanitation across our properties. The role supports turnover cleaning, infection control, and responsive work orders while ensuring respectful interactions with tenants and staff.

The position emphasizes health and safety, heavy cleaning tasks, and on-call availability, with a salary in the upper $20s per hour and benefits as a Living Wage Employer.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform heavy cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, disinfecting floors, washing walls and glass, and removing rubbish.
  • Clean windows, mirrors, and glass partitions using appropriate methods and products.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of resident units, including common areas.
  • Perform unit turnover cleaning per Pacifica Housing standards and specifications.
  • Carry out pathogen-level cleaning when required to sustain a sterile environment in units.
  • Report safety hazards or incidents to the Field Manager and follow infection control practices.

Position Title: Janitor
Reports to: Manager of Supportive Housing
Compensation: $23.99-$25.79/hour
Union: BCGEU
Status: Part Time - Regular
Schedule: 8:30am-5:00pm, Tuesday to Friday (64 hours bi-weekly)

Position’s Primary Objectives:

The Janitorial Cleaner is responsible for ensuring that Pacifica Housing properties are maintained to high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety. This role performs a variety of janitorial and heavy cleaning duties according to established schedules and work orders, including unit turnovers, deep cleaning, and maintaining common areas.

The Janitorial Cleaner contributes directly to tenant health, safety, and satisfaction by:

  • Performing thorough cleaning tasks to sustain a safe and hygienic living environment.
  • Completing unit turnover cleaning to Pacifica Housing specifications.
  • Responding to cleaning work orders in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Supporting infection control by performing pathogen-level cleaning as required.
  • Maintaining professional, respectful relationships with tenants, staff, and colleagues.

This position requires attention to detail, the ability to perform physically demanding cleaning tasks, and a strong commitment to health and safety.

Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning & Sanitation
  • Perform heavy cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, and disinfecting floors; washing walls and glass; and removing rubbish.
  • Clean windows, mirrors, and glass partitions using appropriate cleaning methods and products.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of resident units, including common areas.
  • Perform unit turnover cleaning in accordance with Pacifica Housing standards and specifications.
  • Carry out pathogen-level cleaning when required to sustain a sterile environment in units.
Safety & Compliance
  • Report safety hazards, accidents, or injury incidents immediately to the Field Manager.
  • Follow infection control and health and safety practices when completing cleaning duties.
  • Support compliance with organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Complete and submit janitorial work orders and mileage claims to the Field Manager.
  • Maintain accurate records of cleaning activities and work orders completed.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Maintain cordial and cooperative relationships with supportive housing staff and tenants.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure cleaning needs are met across sites.
Other Duties
  • Perform additional janitorial or building-related duties as required to support operations.
  • Remain available for on-call emergency cleaning as scheduled.
Qualifications (minimum Education and Experience requirements)

Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Education:
  • High school graduation is preferred.
  • Must hold a Basic First Aid Certificate.
Experience:
  • Experience in a non-profit housing environment is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in a residential building janitorial role.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong skills in residential janitorial cleaning, including heavy cleaning duties.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and infection control.
  • Ability to complete physically demanding tasks and maintain consistent work quality.
  • Proficiency in using a mobile phone for email, texting, calls, and calendar management.
  • to work independently and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
Additional Criteria for Role:
  • Completion of a Criminal Record Check with the Vulnerable Sector required before employment.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle with $2 million liability “business class” insurance.
  • Availability for off-hours emergency on-call rotation.

As Pacifica Housing works with vulnerable populations, We require all staff to successfully clear a Vulnerable Sectors Criminal Record Check run by the Ministry of Justice. Any offer of employment is contingent on the applicant providing proof of criminal record check prior to commencing employment.
