Job summary

Umbrella Family and Child Centres of Hamilton is hiring a Permanent, Part time Before and After Educator at the Rosedale Centre in Hamilton, ON. The role focuses on developing and implementing programs that meet children's developmental needs, providing snacks, supervising activities, and ensuring safety.

The position honors a 27.75-hour week with programming time, offering competitive wage rates per the collective agreement: Non-RECE $26.35/hr and RECE $28.00/hr.

Qualifications

• ECE Diploma and regulatory eligibility to work with children
• Experience in a childcare setting
• Demonstrated knowledge of how children develop and learn (How Does Learning Happen?)
• Experience in planning and implementing programs for JK/SK and school-aged children
• Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills

Responsibilities

• Greet children and families with warmth and professionalism
• Support children as they transition from home to program and foster social engagement
• Engage children in meaningful activities using available materials
• Provide healthy morning snacks and ensure proper handwashing
• Assist children with tidying up and preparing for the school day, including outdoor play
• Set up and facilitate activities aligned with learning standards
• Supervise snack time and ensure safe eating
• Provide indoor and outdoor play opportunities and support children’s interests
• Monitor children’s behaviour and offer guidance as needed

Location: Rosedale Centre, 25 Erindale Ave, Hamilton, ON L8K 4R2

Total Hours per Week: 27.75 (including 1.5 programming time)

Schedule: Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 8:30 am and 2:15 pm to 6:00 pm

Pay Rate (per Collective Agreement, includes wage grants):

Non RECE: $26.35 per hour

RECE: $28.00 per hour

About The Role

As a Before and After School Educator, your primary responsibility is to be present for children and their families while developing and implementing programs that meet their developmental needs and interests. You will create meaningful play experiences, provide healthy snacks, supervise outdoor and indoor activities, and ensure the safety and well‑being of children in your care.

Duties vary by centre, but your role always includes supporting children, assisting colleagues, and contributing to a welcoming and well‑organized environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Greet children and families with warmth and professionalism
• Support children as they transition from home to program, including self‑regulation and social engagement
• Engage children in meaningful activities using a programming cart of materials
• Provide morning snacks, ensuring children wash hands and eat safely
• Help children tidy up and prepare for their school day, including outdoor play as appropriate
• Set up and facilitate activities aligned with How Does Learning Happen?
• Supervise snack and ensure all children eat safely
• Provide indoor and outdoor play opportunities and support children’s interests
• Monitor children’s behaviour, offering guidance and support as needed

Qualifications

• Early Childhood Education Diploma (ECE) and member in good standing with the College of ECEs OR educational requirements to obtain Director’s Approval for working alone with children
• Related experience in a childcare setting
• Demonstrated knowledge and working ability to effectively interact with children requiring behavioural guidance
• Demonstrated knowledge of How Does Learning Happen?
• Experience in program planning and implementation for JK/SK and school‑aged children
• Excellent problem‑solving, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
• Flexibility to adapt to a variety of responsibilities and schedules
• Passion for supporting children, families, and colleagues in a positive, team‑focused environment

Certifications

• Standard First Aid with CPR Level C
• Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check
• Proof of up‑to‑date immunizations (TB, Tetanus, MMR)
