Umbrella Family and Child Centres of Hamilton is hiring a Before and After School Educator at Balaclava Centre in Freelton. The role focuses on creating engaging programs, supervising snacks, and supporting children’s transition to school in a safe, welcoming environment.

The position is permanent, part-time, with hours totaling 27.75 per week and a programming time allowance of 1.5 hours. Compensation follows the Collective Agreement: RECEs ${"$"}28.00/hr and Non-RECEs ${"$"}26.35/hr, with

Qualifications

• ECE Diploma and good standing with College of ECEs OR requirements to obtain Director’s Approval to work alone with children
• Experience in a childcare setting
• Knowledge of How Does Learning Happen? and applying it in programming
• Experience planning and delivering programs for JK/SK and school-aged children

Responsibilities

• Greet children and families warmly and professionally
• Support children transitioning from home to program
• Engage children with a programming cart of materials
• Provide morning snacks and ensure hand hygiene
• Assist with tidy up and prep for school day, including outdoor play
• Set up and facilitate activities aligned with How Does Learning Happen?
• Supervise snack and ensure safe eating
• Provide indoor and outdoor play opportunities and support children’s interests
• Monitor and guide children’s behaviour as needed

Location:

Balaclava Centre, 280 10 Concession Rd E, Freelton, ON L8B 1H6

Total Hours per Week:

27.75 with 1.5 hours programming time

Schedule:

Monday-Friday 6:45am-9:30am and 3:15pm-5:45pm

Pay Rate (per Collective Agreement, includes wage grants):

• RECE- $28.00 per hour
• Non RECE- $26.35

About The Role

As a Before and After School Educator, your primary responsibility is to be present for children and their families while developing and implementing programs that meet their developmental needs and interests. You will create meaningful play experiences, provide healthy snacks, supervise outdoor and indoor activities, and ensure the safety and well-being of children in your care.

Duties vary by centre, but your role always includes supporting children, assisting colleagues, and contributing to a welcoming and well-organized environment.

Qualifications

• Early Childhood Education Diploma (ECE) and member in good standing with the College of ECEs OR educational requirements to obtain Director’s Approval for working alone with children
• Related experience in a childcare setting
• Demonstrated knowledge and working ability to effectively interact with children requiring behavioural guidance
• Demonstrated knowledge of How Does Learning Happen?
• Experience in program planning and implementation for JK/SK and school-aged children
• Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
• Flexibility to adapt to a variety of responsibilities and schedules
• Passion for supporting children, families, and colleagues in a positive, team-focused environment

Certifications:

• Standard First Aid with CPR Level C
• Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check
• Proof of up-to-date immunizations (TB, Tetanus, MMR)

Key Responsibilities:

• Greet children and families with warmth and professionalism
• Support children as they transition from home to program, including self-regulation and social engagement
• Engage children in meaningful activities using a programming cart of materials
• Provide morning snacks, ensuring children wash hands and eat safely
• Help children tidy up and prepare for their school day, including outdoor play as appropriate
• Set up and facilitate activities aligned with How Does Learning Happen?
• Supervise snack and ensure all children eat safely
• Provide indoor and outdoor play opportunities and support children’s interests
• Monitor children’s behaviour, offering guidance and support as needed
