Job description

Role and Facility Information

The Comox Valley Campus of the North Island Hospital in the beautiful and family-friendly Comox Valley is seeking a full time General Internal Medicine specialist. Applicants must hold Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) certification or equivalent and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. The successful applicant will join a collegial group of internists which will include (when current recruitment is complete) 9 general internists, 2 GIM/Intensivists, 2 respirologists, an endocrinologist and a gastroenterologist. Clinical duties will include inpatient GIM coverage including weeks of telemetry unit and ICU coverage. Participation in the medicine call schedule is mandatory with an aspirational 1:9 or 1:10 frequency of night call which includes covering the community-level ICU. Overnight call is supported by MOCAP funding, and it is not required to remain on-site overnight. Candidates will also be expected to engage in an outpatient general internal medicine practice to support the growing need for internal medicine services in our community. There will be opportunity to participate in interpreting hospital-based ECGs, Holter monitors and Exercise Stress tests. In addition to clinical duties, the successful applicant will work with hospital administration and their colleagues to support local educational activities including teaching the UBC medical students, Family Practice residents, and Internal Medicine residents. There will be opportunities to participate in coordinating multidisciplinary quality improvement initiatives. Candidates may qualify for recruitment incentives through the Ministry of Health Rural Subsidy Agreement. The Comox Valley medical community is a collegial group of physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists and midwives who share common values of medical excellence and a balanced lifestyle. This balance includes great programs and facilities for families and the availability of outstanding year-round recreational activities. We look forward to receiving applications from qualified physicians who would seriously consider making the Comox Valley their home. In the interim, locum opportunities may also be available, which would afford an opportunity to experience Comox first-hand.

Community Information

The beautiful oceanfront Town of Comox is located on the central east coast of Vancouver Island. The Comox Valley includes the towns of Comox, Courtenay and Cumberland which together have an immediate catchment of over 72,000 people. With its short, mild winters and warm dry summers, it is one of the most diverse recreational and cultural locations in the world. Known for its abundant wildlife, it is a place where you can ski, golf, fish and go to the theatre – all in the same day. Comox offers all the amenities of a larger city with the charm of a small-town setting, including high quality daycares, excellent schools (both French and English), relatively affordable housing, and easy access by air to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Comox Valley Hospital is a 154-bed acute care facility opened in 2017, managed by the Vancouver Island Health Authority. This new facility includes a closed 8-bed ICU and a 10-bed telemetry unit. In order to support our growing community, the Comox Valley Hospital is looking to expand internal medicine capacity.
