Job summary

Kinaxis is seeking an AI/ML Research Intern to join our AI and Advanced Mathematical Modeling team. You will explore time-series forecasting and generative AI for supply chain planning, design reproducible experiments, and develop prototypes that could influence product direction.

You will work with experienced researchers and engineers, building hypotheses, evaluating methods, and communicating findings to technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a master's or PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, or a related field
  • Strong foundation in machine learning, statistics, and experimental methodology
  • Hands-on AI/ML research experience through graduate research, publications, thesis work, research internships, or substantial projects
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with modern ML frameworks
  • Ability to translate open-ended problems into testable hypotheses and well-designed experiments

Responsibilities

  • Conduct applied research in machine learning, focusing on time-series forecasting and generative AI for supply chain planning
  • Review literature, identify methods, formulate research questions and hypotheses
  • Design and run reproducible experiments using real-world and benchmark datasets
  • Develop and evaluate models against strong baselines with quantitative/qualitative metrics
  • Analyze results, limitations, and trade-offs, and communicate findings clearly
  • Build research prototypes and collaborate with researchers, engineers, and domain experts to assess product potential
  • Contribute to reports, demonstrations, publications, and patents where appropriate
  • Work with a mentor providing research guidance and support

About the team

Our AI and Advanced Mathematical Modeling team explores how machine learning can advance supply chain planning. We conduct applied research and translate promising ideas into practical capabilities that help Maestro users solve complex business problems.

We are looking for a master's or PhD student to join our team as an AI/ML Research Intern. You will investigate challenging research questions in areas such as time-series modeling and generative AI, work closely with experienced researchers and engineers, and evaluate how emerging methods can create value in real-world supply chain applications.

Location

You should be located in Eastern time zone. If in Ottawa or Toronto, you must work from the office at least three days a week.Other Canada Eastern time zone Locations – REMOTE

Term Duration

This is a full-time, 8 or 12-month position, starting January 2027.

Intern Eligibility

This position is open to interns. To be eligible for an Intern position at Kinaxis, you must either be currently enrolled in full-time education or, if you are a recent/upcoming graduate, your graduation date must be within 12 months of the placement end date.

What you will do
  • Conduct applied research in machine learning, with a focus on time-series forecasting and generative AI for supply chain planning
  • Review relevant literature, identify promising methods, and formulate research questions and hypotheses
  • Design and run reproducible experiments using real-world and benchmark datasets
  • Develop and evaluate models against strong baselines using appropriate quantitative and qualitative metrics
  • Analyze results, limitations, robustness, and practical trade-offs, and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Build research prototypes and collaborate with researchers, data scientists, engineers, and domain experts to assess their product potential
  • Contribute to new product ideas, technical reports, demonstrations, publications, and patent applications, where appropriate
  • Work with a dedicated mentor who will provide research guidance and support throughout the internship
What we are looking for
  • You are enrolled in or recently graduated from a master's or PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, or a related field
  • You have a strong foundation in machine learning, statistics, and experimental methodology
  • You have hands‑on AI/ML research experience through graduate research, publications, thesis work, research internships, or substantial projects
  • You are proficient in Python and experienced with modern machine learning frameworks
  • You can translate an open-ended problem into testable hypotheses, well-designed experiments, and clearly supported conclusions
  • You are curious about new research, comfortable working with ambiguity, and motivated to apply ML to real-world problems
  • You communicate technical ideas clearly and enjoy collaborating across research, engineering, and business domains
Nice to have
  • Research experience in time-series forecasting, probabilistic forecasting, and time-series foundation models including PFNs
  • Experience with generative AI, including large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, and agents
  • Knowledge of statistical inference, uncertainty quantification, and causal inference
  • Experience evaluating foundation models, including fine-tuning, adaptation, benchmarking, and error analysis
  • A record of research communication through publications, preprints, or technical reports
