Job description

Intermediate Wildlife Field Biologist -- Calgary or Edmonton, AB

At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery, and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

As a wildlife biologist, you will provide technical direction and support for the wildlife biology components of our challenging natural resource projects, as well as mentoring and guidance to our team of biologists. You'll work as part of multi-disciplinary project teams associated with our Western Canada offices and contribute directly to the environmental planning, permitting, and construction support efforts of government and privately-owned infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading field crews for multiple survey scopes, including data collection efforts, managing multi-person crews, liaising with client field contacts, assisting with the development of methodology, and some technical writing. While field-based wildlife studies will comprise the majority of work, the Intermediate Wildlife Field Biologist could also be required to support other biophysical disciplines as needed.

Bring your enthusiasm for learning and desire to conserve our natural resources, and we’ll help you grow!

Here's what you'll need

  1. B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biology or other environmental discipline, primarily related to wildlife, or equivalent demonstrated experience
  2. Hold or be eligible for a Professional designation, with an organization such as the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists and/or the BC College of Applied Biology
  3. Demonstrated experience in environmental consulting related to Canadian wildlife
  4. Demonstrated experience leading wildlife-related field studies, reviewing and QA field data, and directing and/or managing wildlife crews in remote settings
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of provincial and federal wildlife legislation and regulatory requirements, primarily in western Canada
  6. Willingness and comfort working in the field in remote locations for up to 2 or 3 weeks at a time
  7. Experience working alongside clients, landowners, other stakeholders, and the public
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills, team-oriented, and enjoy working collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team
  9. Positive attitude with a desire to lead and mentor fellow biologists
  10. A driver’s license and ability to provide a clean, 3-year driving abstract

Ideally, you’ll also have:

  1. Experience working with a diverse range of industrial clients
  2. Demonstrated technical writing skills and experience writing applications and technical reports for activities that are provincially and/or federally regulated
  3. Experience in support of other biophysical study areas such as wetlands, rare plants, weeds, environmental monitoring or inspection, water quality monitoring, and/or fisheries
  4. Ability to think strategically in developing novel approaches to wildlife management and mitigation
  5. Experience traversing and/or working in remote areas in various terrain and weather conditions
  6. Experience driving 4x4 trucks on remote and gravel roads, and experience with UTVs and hauling trailers
