We have an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate/Senior Structural Engineer to join our Building Design Team at R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside). We are seeking a leadership-oriented professional with an interest in the development of people to grow our Building Design Team and expand our existing client base.

Based out of Hamilton, Mississauga, Newmarket, Pickering or Barrie the successful candidate will be responsible for working directly with our team of engineers and designers, to meet directly with clients and other stakeholders, and to drive the successful completion of projects with an eye for growth and development of the Burnside brand throughout Ontario.

The successful candidate will join an experienced team of professionals with the planning, study, design, approval and construction of projects such as industrial facilities, commercial buildings, residential developments, transportation infrastructure, public works operations centres and other public/private building infrastructure. Our success is built on supporting the entrepreneurial efforts of our staff, and we are looking for a candidate with Building Design experience to contribute to our dynamic team.

Role Specifics

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • • Leading projects and project teams as either a Lead Engineer or a Project Manager dependent upon project requirements and complexity;
    • Report to, and work with, the Senior Engineers and Team Managers for project development and execution;
    • Providing leadership and technical guidance to junior support staff;
    • Project and client management responsibility for a variety of public and private facility development projects;
    • Preparing a wide variety of documents including proposals, workplans, schedules, technical memorandums, meeting minutes, technical specifications, drawings and reports utilizing the templates developed both by our team and the corporate standards;
    • Providing structural design, drawings, specifications and construction reviews for a variety of building services including municipal, industrial and commercial;
    • In addition to design, undertaking a variety of assignments including condition assessments, investigations, feasibility studies and other studies as required;
    • Collaborating with and contributing to multi-office design teams to ensure project delivery successfully meets the needs of our clients;
    • Managing project schedules, resource allocation, and budget to ensure projects are completed within established parameters;
    • Effectively communicating with project stakeholders and outside agencies; and
    • Other duties as required.

Professional Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

The following qualifications, experience and skills are required:

  • • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario with a minimum of 10 years of consulting and structural design experience, in good standing with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO);
    • A Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or a related field is essential;
    • Strong understanding of current industry regulations, standards, and best practices;
    • Hands-on experience with a variety of building systems and proficiency in applicable design software;
    • Knowledge of municipal and provincial approval agencies’ processes and guidelines;
    • Demonstrated project management expertise, with a keen understanding of budget and time constraints;
    • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word;
    • Excellent knowledge of drawing set-up and production;
    • Strong proposal and technical writing skills;
    • Strong client development and management skills;
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills; and
    • Excellent organizational skills.
