Job summary

Nordion, part of Sotera Health, is seeking an Engineer Associate in Ottawa to lead design, testing and ongoing technical and manufacturing support of sealed sources and transport packages used for the shipment of radioisotopes.

Reporting to the Manager, Package & Support Engineering, you will collaborate with production teams, ensure compliance with engineering standards, and drive prototype development, analysis and documentation to meet project budgets and schedules.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • 3+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer designation or eligible for licensure.
  • Experience with design and testing of mechanical/electromechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, licensing and manufacture of sealed sources and transport packages.
  • Coordinate prototype manufacture and testing; prepare analyses and test reports.
  • Provide guidance and quality control for teammates.
  • Stay current with Nordion manufacturing processes for sealed sources.
  • Support operations and internal customers with technical queries.

We are a trusted partner to more than 5,800 customers in over 50 countries, including more than 40 of the top 50 medical device companies and 9 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies.As an Engineer Associate, you will be responsible for the design, testing and on-going technical and manufacturing support of sealed sources and transport packages used for the shipment of radioisotopes.Reporting to the Manager, Package & Support Engineering, you will be responsible for the design, testing and on-going technical and manufacturing support of sealed sources and transport packages used for the shipment of radioisotopes.You will work closely with the group responsible for the production of sealed radioactive sources used in sterilization applications, and the group responsible for the operation and maintenance of transport packages.Key ResponsibilitiesApply a fully proficient and in-depth knowledge of engineering principles and standards.Lead or participate in various aspects of the design, licensing and manufacture of sealed sources and transport packages. This will include leading the design process; coordinating prototype manufacture; review and approval of engineering drawings, preparation of engineering analysis and calculations, creating test specifications, coordinating and executing testing; compiling results and generating reports; designing or modifying production processes and equipment.Lead mechanical engineering projects and be fully accountable to meet defined budgets, schedules, and functionality requirements, commensurate with your work experience.Stay current with the requirements for and capabilities of Nordion manufacturing processes and equipment for sealed sources in order to respond to queries from operations and other internal customers.Be able to provide task guidance and quality control for activities of other team members.QualificationsEducation: Bachelor degree in Engineering (Mechanical)Experience: Preferably 3+ years of relevant work experience in mechanical engineeringCertificates: Professional Engineer designation or be eligible for accreditation as a professional engineer.Skills and CompetenciesDesign and engineering analysis of mechanical systems and components.Design, prototyping, testing and troubleshooting of mechanical or electromechanical equipment used for manufacturing processes.Design, refinement, implementation and documentation of manufacturing processes.The following aspects would be considered an asset:Prior experience in nuclear industry, especially in the design, troubleshooting and testing of equipment operating inside hot cells.Familiarity with automated welding, associated technologies and equipment.Some exposure to radiation resistance of materials and components.Understanding of various methods and technologies used for leak testing of critical components and systems.Excellent verbal communication skills. You must be able to clearly explain complex technical, regulatory and compliance aspects to non-technical audiences.Proven ability to exercise sound technical judgments on complex decisions falling outside standard practices and procedures.Experience providing technical recommendations with limited review from senior staff, providing technical guidance to other engineers and to technicians, and providing review and feedback on technical items.Excellent technical writing skills.Effective team player.Strong interpersonal and communication skills.Additional RequirementsOccasional overtime to meet project requirements.Occasional travel requirements.Training Required:Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker.Sotera Health goes to market through its three best-in-class businesses – Sterigenics, Nordion and Nelson Labs.
