Job number: IW-201

Detail

Job title: Intermediate Commercial Underwriter - Job #201

Description

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking anIntermediate Commercial Underwriterto join a growing Canadian Property & Casualty insurance organization in Calgary. This opportunity is well suited to an underwriter who enjoys the technical side of underwriting, wants meaningful ownership of their accounts, and is excited by the opportunity to contribute within a smaller, entrepreneurial environment.

The Commercial Underwriter will assess new and renewal Commercial Property & Casualty business, work closely with broker and MGA partners, and take ownership of accounts from submission and risk analysis through to issuance and ongoing account management. The role offers exposure to subscription business, portfolio and program underwriting, delegated underwriting arrangements, and increasingly complex commercial risks.

This is not a highly segmented underwriting desk. The successful candidate will need to be adaptable, hands-on and comfortable contributing beyond a narrowly defined job description. As the organization continues to build its underwriting capabilities, there will be opportunities to contribute ideas around underwriting guidelines, tools, processes, policy wording and the continued development of the portfolio.

The Employer

Our client is a growing Canadian Property & Casualty insurer with an entrepreneurial and collaborative culture. The organization offers a less bureaucratic environment than many traditional carriers, with accessible leadership, meaningful underwriting autonomy and an expectation that employees take ownership and help one another.

The company is continuing to evolve its underwriting platform and capabilities, making this an attractive environment for someone who enjoys change, wants their ideas to be heard and is motivated by the opportunity to help build rather than simply inherit established processes.

About You

You are a commercial underwriter with solid technical fundamentals who can step into the role and contribute with limited hand-holding. You enjoy underwriting itself and are interested in developing your technical capabilities rather than viewing underwriting primarily as a path into sales or business development.

You are comfortable thinking critically rather than relying exclusively on rigid rules or processes. You take ownership, ask questions when needed and enjoy collaborating with a close-knit team. You are also comfortable working in an environment where systems and processes are continuing to develop and where some hands-on administrative work remains part of managing an account.

Candidates coming from commercial small business underwriting, broader commercial underwriting, or a brokerage/MGA environment with meaningful underwriting authority may all be considered.

Necessary Qualifications Include

  • 3+ years of hands-on Commercial Property & Casualty underwriting experience
  • Strong commercial property underwriting fundamentals and sound underwriting judgment
  • Ability to independently assess new and renewal business
  • Experience establishing appropriate pricing, deductibles, limits, terms and conditions
  • Strong broker relationship and communication skills
  • Strong critical-thinking, organizational and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Professional, personable and collaborative approach
  • Adaptability and comfort working in a growing environment
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Calgary-based candidates strongly preferred due to the hybrid office environment

Experience with program or portfolio underwriting, subscription business, split rating, delegated underwriting arrangements, commercial realty, retail, hospitality, industrial, warehouse, manufacturing or Course of Construction risks would be considered an asset. Experience with risk-management tools such as CATNet, BatchGeo or FUS would also be beneficial. A CIP designation or progress toward completion is an asset but is not a strict requirement.

What’s in It for You

  • Salary range of approximately $75,000–$90,000 depending on experience
  • Hybrid Calgary-based work environment
  • Opportunity for meaningful underwriting autonomy
  • Exposure to increasingly complex commercial risks
  • Opportunity to learn subscription, program and portfolio underwriting
  • Ability to contribute to the development of underwriting guidelines, tools and processes
  • Collaborative environment with accessible leadership
  • Opportunity to grow alongside an evolving insurance organization
  • Health benefits, RRSP matching and performance-based bonus program
