Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Commercial Underwriter to join a growing commercial property and casualty team in Alberta. This is an opportunity for a technically strong underwriter who enjoys working across a broad commercial portfolio, taking ownership of accounts through the full underwriting lifecycle, and acting as a senior resource to a relatively junior team.

The successful candidate will assess, price, structure, and manage commercial risks from initial quote through binding, policy issuance, and invoicing. They will also support referrals above junior authority levels, build strong broker relationships, participate in broker visits and industry events, and contribute to the continued growth of the commercial portfolio.

This role is well suited to an underwriter who values autonomy and broad account exposure rather than working within a narrowly defined segment or specialty.

The Employer

Our client is an established Canadian property and casualty insurer with a growing commercial insurance operation. The organization writes a diversified commercial book across multiple industries and risk segments and provides its underwriters with broad exposure and meaningful ownership of their accounts.

The commercial team is continuing to grow, and the organization is investing in additional underwriting support and improvements to its internal systems and processes. This is an environment where an experienced underwriter can make a meaningful technical contribution while helping develop the capabilities of the broader team.

About You

You are an experienced commercial P&C underwriter with strong technical judgment and the ability to work independently across a varied book of business.

You are comfortable evaluating complex risks, determining appropriate pricing and structure, and making thoughtful underwriting decisions within established appetite and authority. You also enjoy working directly with brokers and are confident building relationships, discussing opportunities, and participating in business development activities.

Just as importantly, you enjoy sharing your knowledge. You are comfortable acting as a technical resource for less experienced underwriters, supporting referrals, and helping junior team members strengthen their underwriting judgment.

You are adaptable and comfortable working in an organization that is continuing to improve its systems and processes. You understand the importance of balancing technical underwriting, service expectations, broker relationships, and overall portfolio performance.

Necessary Qualifications Include
  • 6+ years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience
  • Broad commercial underwriting experience across multiple classes of business
  • Strong technical knowledge of commercial property and liability risks
  • Experience assessing, pricing, and structuring complex commercial accounts
  • Ability to manage the full underwriting lifecycle from quote through binding, policy issuance, and related processing
  • Strong underwriting judgment and ability to work independently
  • Experience working directly with broker partners
  • Confidence participating in broker meetings, visits, and business development activities
  • Ability and interest in mentoring less experienced underwriting staff
  • Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Experience with primary and excess structures, facultative reinsurance, and catastrophe-exposed risks considered an asset
  • Experience underwriting industries such as manufacturing, realty, course of construction, hospitality, or similar commercial risks considered an asset
  • Post-secondary education and/or a CIP designation considered an asset
  • Level 2 General Insurance Licence preferred
  • Strong candidates without current licensing may be considered where they are willing to obtain the required licence within the agreed timeframe
What’s in It for You
  • Broad underwriting exposure across a diversified commercial P&C portfolio
  • Full account ownership through the underwriting lifecycle
  • High degree of underwriting autonomy
  • Opportunity to mentor and support a developing underwriting team
  • Direct broker interaction and business development exposure
  • Opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of the commercial operation
  • Additional underwriting support being added to the team
  • Ongoing investment in internal systems and process improvements
  • Opportunity for Calgary-based candidates to be considered, with periodic travel to Sherwood Park for team integration and meetings
