Detail
Description
The Opportunity

Our client, a well-established Canadian commercial insurance organization, is looking for an experienced Sr. ProductionUnderwriter to join its Calgary team.

This is a highly senior underwriting opportunity designed for someone who combines strong technical commercial insurance expertise with an equally strong ability to build relationships and generate profitable business.

The position is both production-focused and broker-facing. You will manage and underwrite sophisticated commercial accounts while working closely with brokerage partners to identify opportunities, negotiate solutions and grow a profitable portfolio.

As one of the most experienced technical resources within the regional underwriting team, you will also play an important role in coaching and developing other underwriters.

What You'll Be Doing

Underwrite and manage a portfolio of highly complex and specialized commercial risks.

Assess new and existing business while balancing growth opportunities with underwriting discipline and profitability.

Develop creative underwriting solutions for complex or non-standard situations.

Build strong, long-term relationships with brokers and other key business partners.

Identify and pursue opportunities to generate profitable new commercial business.

Negotiate terms, pricing and coverage while maintaining sound underwriting standards.

Deliver a high level of responsiveness and service to brokerage partners.

Ensure underwriting decisions align with established guidelines, business objectives and applicable regulatory requirements.

Maintain strong standards around file documentation, data quality and service expectations.

Act as a senior technical resource for colleagues when dealing with challenging or unusual risks.

Coach, mentor and support underwriting staff throughout the region.

Help ensure underwriting philosophies, best practices and technical guidelines are consistently understood and applied across the team.

Contribute to the organization's broader growth strategy by bringing forward ideas, market insight and innovative solutions.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will bring extensive commercial P&C underwriting experience along with a proven ability to operate confidently in a broker-facing, relationship-driven environment.

Ideally, you will have:

10+ years of experience within commercial property and casualty insurance.

Significant experience underwriting complex commercial accounts.

Strong technical underwriting knowledge and sound risk-selection judgment.

Demonstrated sales, negotiation and relationship-management skills.

Experience working directly with brokers and developing profitable business opportunities.

The ability to manage complex situations and develop practical, commercially minded solutions.

Experience coaching, mentoring or providing technical guidance to other underwriting professionals.

Postsecondary education and/or an equivalent combination of industry experience.

A completed CIP and/or FCIP designation.

Strong knowledge of commercial insurance contracts, underwriting guidelines and philosophy, rating programs and risk information resources.

Familiarity with underwriting manuals, regulatory requirements and standard underwriting workflow processes.

Strong computer skills and comfort working within technology-based underwriting environments.

Who Will Thrive in This Role?

This opportunity would suit a seasoned commercial underwriter who enjoys being out in the market and doesn't want to spend their entire day behind a desk reviewing files.

You are likely someone who:

Enjoys building relationships with brokers.

Is comfortable developing and pursuing new business.

Has the technical credibility to handle complicated commercial risks.

Can confidently negotiate with experienced brokerage partners.

Thinks commercially while maintaining underwriting discipline.

Enjoys sharing knowledge and helping less experienced underwriters develop.

Can serve as a trusted technical resource within a regional underwriting team.

Likes having a combination of underwriting, relationship management, business development and mentorship in their role.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

Our client offers a flexible hybrid environment along with a comprehensive total rewards package designed to support employees throughout their careers.

Offerings include:
