Job summary

Bluestar Engineering Ltd. is seeking an Intermediate Civil/Structural Engineer in Calgary to lead structural design for commercial and industrial projects. You will perform analyses, develop drawings, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.

The role requires hands-on experience with steel structures, reinforced concrete foundations, and FE analysis, plus strong reporting and communication skills. EPCM exposure is preferred, with opportunities to advance in a collaborative, multi-discipline

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering.
• P.Eng. Alberta or eligible for APEGA registration.
• 5+ years of experience in commercial building structural design; EPCM experience preferred.
• Strong experience with structural steel design and reinforced concrete foundations.
• Proficiency with STAAD.Pro or similar structural analysis software.
• Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and structural modelling.
• Knowledge of NBCC, CSA S16, CSA A23.3, and loading requirements; IBC an asset.
• Strong engineering calculation and technical documentation skills.
• Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Review shop drawings, RFIs, and submissions.

As a fully integrated multi-discipline organization, Bluestar offers a full spectrum of engineering services for identifying, planning, and executing capital projects and optimizing existing ones.

We are currently seeking an Intermediate Civil/Structural Engineer to join our team.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer with strong experience in commercial building design to join our Civil Engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for structural analysis, design, and preparation of engineering deliverables for a variety of commercial and industrial projects.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with steel structures, reinforced concrete foundations, structural analysis, and finite element analysis, along with strong technical report-writing and communication skills.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design for commercial and industrial buildings.
• Design structural steel framing systems, including beams, columns, bracing, connections, and supporting structures.
• Design reinforced concrete foundations, including spread footings, strip footings, grade beams, pile foundations, and equipment foundations.
• Perform structural analysis using STAAD.Pro and other finite element analysis/design software.
• Develop structural calculations, design criteria, engineering reports, and technical specifications.
• Review architectural, civil, mechanical, and other engineering drawings for structural coordination.
• Prepare and review structural drawings and design details.
• Evaluate existing structures and develop recommendations for repair, modification, or strengthening where required.
• Coordinate with clients, contractors, architects, and other engineering disciplines.
• Conduct site visits, field reviews, and inspections as required.
• Review shop drawings, RFIs, and contractor submissions.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable Canadian building codes, CSA standards, and project-specific requirements.
• Provide technical support during construction and address structural issues that arise in the field.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a related discipline.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta, or eligibility for registration with APEGA.
• 5+ years of experience in commercial building structural design. EPCM experience is preferred.
• Strong experience with structural steel design and reinforced concrete foundation design.
• Proficiency with STAAD.Pro or similar structural analysis software.
• Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and structural modelling.
• Good understanding of Canadian structural design codes and standards, including NBCC, CSA S16, CSA A23.3, and applicable loading requirements. Experience with the International Building Code is an asset.
• Strong engineering calculation and technical documentation skills.
• Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, Tekla, or other structural modelling/detailing software.
• Experience with industrial structures, equipment supports, pipe racks, or foundations.
• Experience performing structural assessments of existing buildings.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary BIM models.
• Previous consulting engineering experience.
• Strong understanding of construction methods and practical detailing.
