Job summary

WestJet is seeking an Intermediate DBA to administer, optimize, and support enterprise databases across Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, IBM Db2, and Azure SQL. You will ensure availability, performance, and security while contributing to cloud migration efforts.

As part of a team with Senior DBAs and MSP resources, you will handle day-to-day operations, backups, patching, and performance tuning. You’ll participate in on-call rotations and strive for operational excellence in a fast-paced

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma in a related field with 3–5 years of experience preferred
  • Hands-on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle Databases is required
  • Experience with IBM Db2, Azure SQL Database, or Azure SQL Managed Instance is preferred
  • Experience with daily database operations: backup/restore, patching, monitoring, and maintenance
  • Experience diagnosing query performance issues including blocking and deadlocks
  • Experience in HA/DR technologies and RBAC user management
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools: Redgate Monitor, SolarWinds DPA, OEM, Db2 Genius Hub
  • Scripting in PowerShell, Bash, or Python is a plus
  • Understanding networking basics for database connectivity is required
  • Understanding Windows/Linux operating systems is required
  • Adherence to Change Management and ITSM practices
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Good communication with technical and non-technical teams
  • Proactive mindset for reliability and performance
  • Commitment to continuous learning and improvement

Responsibilities

  • Provide Database Administration and Operational Support for enterprise databases including monitoring, maintenance, HA/DR configurations, and troubleshooting
  • Administer database users, roles, and permissions following least-privilege principles
  • Deploy security patches to protect data and reduce vulnerabilities
  • Monitor and optimize database solutions using tools to track performance and capacity planning
  • Collaborate with application teams on scalable database structures, procedures, and migrations
  • Assist with root-cause analysis during incidents affecting performance or data integrity
  • Support hybrid and cloud workloads (Azure SQL Database/Managed Instance)
  • Participate in database modernization, cloud migration, automation, and IaC initiatives

Overview Of Role

WestJet is seeking an Intermediate Analyst – Database Administrator reporting into our Database Services team. This individual will demonstrate a high standard of excellence, enjoys challenges, and is results driven. The incumbent must be highly motivated and enjoy self-learning.

The Intermediate Analyst – Database Administrator (DBA) works with a team comprised of Database Engineers (Senior Database Administrators) and MSP DBA resources. The DBA is responsible for administering, maintaining, and optimizing enterprise database platforms across Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, IBM Db2, and Azure SQL Database. This role supports day-to-day operations, ensures database availability and performance, and contributes to ongoing modernization and cloud migration initiatives. The DBA has solid hands-on experience, strong troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to operational excellence.

NOTE: This role participates in an On-Call rotation.
Key Deliverables & Responsibilities Include
  • Provide Database Administration and Operational Support to enterprise databases including monitoring, routine maintenance, high availability and disaster recovery configuration and testing, and performance troubleshooting, ensuring the health and availability of databases that support various business needs, minimizing downtime, preventing data loss, and maintaining performance and responsiveness
  • Administer database user accounts, roles, and permissions following principals of least privilege
  • Deploy security patches to protect sensitive data, reduce the risk of unauthorized access and protect against vulnerabilities and emerging threats
  • Monitor and optimize database solutions using monitoring tools to track performance, capacity, and system health to enable proactive issue detection and capacity planning along with recommending and implementing improvements to database configuration, indexing strategies, and resource utilization to ensure systems run efficiently and can scale with business growth
  • Collaborate with application teams to implement efficient database structures, stored procedures, and queries, supporting release deployments, schema changes, and data migrations to ensure new features and applications are built on scalable, high performing data foundations and new functionality is delivered smoothly with reduced deployment risks
  • In the event there is an incident involving database performance, availability or data integrity, assist with root cause analysis to prevent recurring issues and improve system reliability
  • Support hybrid and cloud-based database workloads, including, but not limited to, Azure SQL Database and SQL Managed Instance to help WestJet leverage cloud scalability, cost optimization, and modern data capabilities.
  • Participate in database modernization initiatives, including cloud migration, automation, and infrastructure as code practices to reduce manual effort, increase consistency, and align with long term technology strategies
Experience & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Database Administration or related field and 3-5 years of experience is preferred, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Hands-on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server and / or Oracle Databases is required
  • Experience administering IBM Db2, Azure SQL Database, or Azure SQL Managed Instance is preferred
  • Experience administering other database systems is nice to have
  • Proven experience with daily database operations including backup, restore, patching, monitoring database health and uptime as well as routine database maintenance processes including indexing and statistics is required
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving query performance issues, blocking, deadlocks, and resource contention is requiredExperience in implementing and supporting High Availability & Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) database technologies is required
  • Experience in managing user accounts, roles, permissions and role-based access control (RBAC) is required
  • Ability to optimize SQL queries and stored procedures considered an asset
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Redgate Monitor, Solarwinds DPA, Oracle Enterprise Manager, and IBM Db2 Genius Hub is preferred
  • Exposure to automation scripting languages such as PowerShell, Bash, and Python is preferred
  • Understanding of networking basics relevant to database connectivity is required
  • Understanding of operating systems, Windows and/or Linux, is required
  • Adherence to Change Management and IT Service Management practices
  • Attention to detail and operational discipline
