Job summary

Winnipeg School Division is seeking an Intercultural Support Worker to assist newcomer students with transitioning to services and resources in the school system and community, promoting settlement and student achievement. The worker will work as part of a team with teachers, administration, and the community.

The role requires excellent communication, advocacy, and intercultural understanding, with experience supporting refugees and diverse youth.

Qualifications

• a minimum of secondary education, preferably some post-secondary education and coordinating projects or in initiatives around newcomer services.
• experience promoting inter-cultural understanding within diverse youth/families/communities coming from war affected countries.
• experience working to support refugees adjust to their communities and schools.
• excellent communication, advocacy, and interpersonal skills are required.
• values cross cultural perspectives and demonstrates ability to withhold personal bias while working across various religious/political and tribal communities is required.
• Priority will be given to candidates speaking Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, Tigrinya, and Amharic.

Responsibilities

• assist in the reception of new EAL students, their transition and integration into the school community
• support students/families in understanding the school system and in accessing resources available to them
• provide support to school staff in translating/interpreting information to parents and students related to assessments, report cards and other matters of importance and by providing teachers with information about student’s linguistic cultural backgrounds
• refer and facilitate access to resources in the community, social services, health services and government programs
• maintain records, assess, and monitor ongoing needs and provide continual updates to Principal or designate
• co-facilitate and/or co-coordinate workshops or support to groups on settlement issues, cultural awareness
• women’s issues, parenting skills and other information related needs for parents / families and staff
• participate in networking for resources in the wider community and liaise with outside agencies for school programs
• perform other related duties within this classification and other related classifications not exceeding skills and capabilities as required
