Job summary

Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous quality and safety improvement is inherent in this position.

Under the direction of the Clinical Coordinator or designate, the Intensive Case Management Clinician works within the organization's framework and standards, and a rehabilitation/recovery harm reduction-focused model. As part of an interdisciplinary team, the clinician provides assessment, harm reduction strategies, intervention, treatment, outreach, detoxification, and recovery consultation and referral for clients experiencing substance use problems and their families or caregivers. Travel may be required, and transportation arrangements must meet operational needs.

Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in a health-related discipline from an approved post-secondary institution.
  • Recognized post-basic education related to mental illness and/or substance use.
  • Two (2) years of recent related experience supporting clients with substance use and mental health issues in a community setting.
  • Strong knowledge of harm reduction philosophy and practice, including HIV, HCV, and related issues.
  • Experience working with persons living with substance use and mental health concerns.
  • Experience engaging with individuals who have severe substance use problems and do not readily engage in healthcare services.
  • Understanding of substance misuse assessments, treatment methodologies, intervention strategies, and community dynamics.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, such as Mental Health and Child Protection laws.
  • Knowledge of available programs and services and their interrelationships.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.

  • Competence in treating addiction and mental illness within a harm-reduction, recovery-focused framework.
  • Ability to practice from a harm reduction approach.
  • Ability to build relationships and foster culturally safe, trauma-informed care.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and teaching skills.
  • Judgment, observation, client assessment skills, tact, and empathy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to promote positive change and independence.
  • Workload prioritization and organization skills.
  • Proficiency with Windows-based software and related equipment.
  • Ability to foster good public relations.
