Job summary

SolutionAir Limited, a North American manufacturer and distributor of rooftop and air‑handling equipment, is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Manager for its Winnipeg facility. The role leads design and development of I&C systems for HVAC products and directs a skilled engineering team.

The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in engineering, a P.Eng. or eligibility, 7+ years in I&C design, and 2+ years of leadership. Travel within Canada/US may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer, Electrical, or Software Engineering required; P.Eng. designation or eligibility with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba ideal.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of instrumentation and control system design and development in a manufacturing environment.
  • At least two (2) years of leadership experience managing a team of three or more direct reports.
  • Strong knowledge of PLCs, DDC systems, AC/DC control systems, and object‑oriented programming.
  • Experience with ECNs, ECOs, BOMs, and MRP systems; familiarity with engineering change processes.
  • Knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, LonTalk, and IP communication protocols.
  • Ability to interpret customer specs and translate into functional control designs.
  • Willingness to travel within Canada and the United States; valid passport required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of instrumentation and control (I&C) systems for HVAC products.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and direction to the Instrumentation & Controls Engineering team.
  • Oversee PLC and DDC programming, including utilities, diagnostics, and sequence of operations.
  • Manage engineering design releases, including ECN/ECO processes, BOMs, and MRP system updates.
  • Ensure designs meet customer requirements, standards, regulatory compliance, cost, quality, and manufacturability.
  • Develop and oversee design verification and validation plans, testing activities, and product qualification.

Instrumentation & Controls Manager
Responsibilities
  • Leading the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of instrumentation and control (I&C) systems for HVAC products.
  • Providing technical leadership, mentorship, and direction to the Instrumentation & Controls Engineering team.
  • Overseeing PLC and DDC programming, including utilities, diagnostics, and sequence of operations.
  • Managing engineering design releases, including ECN/ECO processes, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and MRP system updates.
  • Ensuring designs meet customer requirements, industry standards, regulatory compliance, cost, quality, and manufacturability objectives.
  • Developing and overseeing design verification and validation plans, testing activities, and product qualification.
  • Supporting manufacturing, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and field service activities.
  • Collaborating with customers, suppliers, and cross‑functional teams to deliver innovative and reliable solutions.
  • Managing engineering projects, priorities, resources, and timelines to achieve project objectives.
  • Driving continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes, products, and team performance.
Ideal Candidate
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer, Electrical, or Software Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (EGM).
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in instrumentation and control system design and development within a manufacturing environment.
  • At least two (2) years of leadership experience managing a team of three (3) or more direct reports.
  • Strong knowledge of PLCs, DDC systems, AC/DC control systems, and object‑oriented programming.
  • Experience with Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), product lifecycle management, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and MRP systems.
  • Knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, LonTalk, and IP communication protocols.
  • Experience interpreting customer specifications and translating them into functional control system designs.
  • Knowledge of electrical power distribution systems, schematics, and applicable industry standards, including UL, CSA, and CE.
  • Strong project management, problem‑solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively, lead cross‑functional teams, and drive innovation and continuous improvement.
  • A valid passport and the ability to travel within Canada and the United States, as required.
