Job summary

Vancouver Island University’s Faculty of Education seeks an experienced education professional to support and guide teacher candidates from initial application through program completion, assisting with admissions, certification and program requirements.

The role involves collaborating with faculty, staff and external partners to foster a student-centred environment and contribute to the success of VIU’s undergraduate Education program.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in counselling or equivalent from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of appropriate teaching methodology in the BC Kindergarten to grade 12 education system.
  • Commitment to teaching, learning and student success; proficiency with information technology.
  • Effective interpersonal skills; ability to work in a team and adapt to diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Eligibility for British Columbia Teaching Certificate or equivalent; commitment to equity and reconciliation.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor teacher candidate program progress.
  • Liaise with undergraduate program chair, field experience office and VIU service areas to support candidate success and retention.
  • Advise program applicants regarding admission requirements.
  • Conduct in-person or online advisor meetings with current program students.
  • Track students' progress throughout the program.
  • Liaise with BC teacher regulatory bodies regarding prerequisites and certification.
  • Triaging academic and well-being support for program students.
  • Evaluate program applications and liaise with VIU Registration and Admission.
  • Guide programmatic admission cycles.
  • Promote undergraduate Teacher Education Programs.

Job description

Vancouver Island University’s Faculty of Education is seeking an experienced education professional to support and guide students as they prepare for careers in teaching. This role plays an important part in the student journey, providing academic and program advising from initial application through program completion while helping students navigate admission, certification and program requirements. Working collaboratively with faculty, staff and external partners, the successful candidate will contribute to a supportive, student-centred environment and to the continued success of VIU’s undergraduate Education program.

Duties
  • monitoring and tracking of teacher candidate program progress
  • liaising with undergraduate program chair, field experience office and wider VIU service areas and systems in support of teacher candidate success and retention
  • advising program applicants regarding admission requirements
  • conducting in person or online advisor meetings with existing program students
  • tracking students' progress throughout program
  • liaising with BC teacher regulatory bodies regarding pre-requisites and professional certification requirements
  • triaging of academic and well-being support for program students
  • evaluating program applications and liaising with VIU Registration and Admission
  • guiding programmatic admission cycles
  • promoting undergraduate Teacher Education Programs
Expectations

Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications

Master's Degree in counselling or equivalent from an appropriately accredited institution.

Evidence of knowledge of appropriate teaching methodology in the BC Kindergarten to grade 12 education system. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, learning and student success. Proficiency with the application and integration of information technology. Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills. Willingness and ability to function in a team setting; responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles. A demonstrated commitment to Truth and Reconciliation through advancing equitable teacher education pathways, supporting Indigenous learners, and preparing future educators to contribute to lasting change in BC’s K-12 education system. Commitment to the development of teacher candidates and knowledge of BC’s current curriculum structure and goals. Eligibility for British Columbia Teaching Certificate or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

An earned doctorate in a relevant area from an appropriately accredited institution. Familiarity with Teacher Education Programs at Vancouver Island University.
