Job summary

The City of Thunder Bay is seeking a qualified swim instructor to deliver safe, engaging instruction for program participants. You will follow core program plans, supervise classes, and maintain a clean pool area while supporting staff during training sessions.

Required certifications include LSS Swim Instructor and Intermediate First Aid/CPR Level C. Strong customer service skills and a proactive attitude are essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

  • Must hold LSS Swim Instructor certification and Intermediate (Standard) First Aid and CPR Level C.
  • Must be customer service oriented and get along with staff.
  • Must demonstrate initiative and show a positive attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs program participants using core program and lesson plans for all classes.

  • Completes report forms related to timesheets, accidents, unusual events, thefts, complaints and instructional programs.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Program Supervisor and the technical direction and guidance of the Senior Instructor, provides safe and enjoyable instruction to program participants.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Instructs program participants using core program and lesson plans for all classes.
  • Returns any equipment to its proper location and maintain a clean pool site.
  • Supervises classes in a safe manner.
  • Participates in training and staff meetings as required.
  • Completes report forms relating to timesheets, accidents, unusual events, thefts, complaints and instructional programs.
  • Repairs equipment or take appropriate action; advises supervisor of any equipment maintenance or replacement needs.
  • Ensures familiarity with emergency procedures of the facility.
  • Pre-tests students, prepares test sheets, and prepares for LSS Examiner, where applicable.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
  • Current certifications: LSS Swim Instructor and Intermediate (Standard) First Aid and CPR Level C
Skills/Abilities:
  • Must be customer service oriented and be able to get along with other members of the staff team
  • Must demonstrate initiative and show a positive attitude
Assets:
  • National Lifeguard
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must maintain all awards current from date of application until end of employment period
  • Must attend and complete within three months of employment, customer service training and WHMIS training
  • Must undergo a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Will be required to work irregular hours and weekends
