Description

The Transport IAII provides transportation, moving, mail and operational support across the StFX campus. The position requires a dependable, safety-conscious and adaptable individual who can work independently and as part of the Grounds & Transport team.

While transportation and mail services are the primary focus of this position, the successful candidate will be expected to cross-train and provide support across Grounds & Transport operations, including snow and ice management, as operational needs require. Priorities may change in response to weather, campus events, emergencies, staffing requirements and other operational demands.

Job Duties:

  • Load, unload and transport furniture, equipment, materials and supplies between campus buildings and off‑campus storage sites, including delivery and retrieval for University events and operational activities.
  • Provide campus mail and scheduled delivery services, including the pickup, sorting, transportation and delivery of mail, materials and other approved items.
  • Pick up and deliver supplies, materials and equipment for Facilities Management personnel and other approved University operational requirements.
  • Operate snow removal equipment and perform manual snow and ice removal as required.
  • Organize and carry out assigned transportation and moving requests efficiently, adjusting work as priorities and operational requirements change.
  • Track completed moving and transportation requests and report exceptions, damage, safety concerns or incomplete work.
  • Safely operate University vehicles, trucks, trailers, material‑handling equipment and other equipment as trained and authorized.
  • Perform routine inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment and report maintenance, repair or safety concerns.
  • Provide flexible support across Grounds & Transport operations, including cross‑training and semi‑skilled work in other areas as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as assigned.

Normal Shift: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Flexibility in scheduling is an important requirement of this position. Operational requirements, particularly snow and ice response, may require work outside regular hours, including early mornings, evenings, nights and weekends. Employees are expected to participate in snow and ice operations as required.

Skills, Education and Abilities Requirements:

  • Minimum Grade 12 or GED equivalent education.
  • Experience operating trucks, trailers, heavy equipment and/or mobile equipment.
  • Experience in grounds, transportation, moving, delivery, facilities or similar operational services would be an asset.
  • Must be able to obtain required certification for forklift and Trackless snowplough operation through an approved third‑party training provider. This may include applicable sight and hearing requirements.
  • Must possess a valid driver's licence
  • Ability to safely lift and manoeuvre a minimum of 25 kg.
  • Ability to perform basic mechanical inspections and minor maintenance of vehicles and equipment within the scope of the position.
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions, operating manuals, procedures and safe work practices.
  • Ability to use a tablet or other mobile device to receive work assignments, enter basic information and update the status of assigned work.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality and commitment to safe work practices, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational, time‑management and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to exercise sound judgement and adapt as operational priorities change.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer‑service skills when interacting with students, faculty, staff and other members of the University community.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new tasks, cross‑train and provide support across Grounds & Transport functions.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in changing weather conditions and physically demanding environments.

The successful candidate will be required to provide:

  • A satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check.
